About this project
Hello, Friends, Family, and Film Enthusiasts of All Stripes!
Welcome to the Kickstarter Page for NANCY, PLEASE. NANCY, PLEASE is the debut feature film from writer/director Andrew Semans. The script was co-written with acclaimed novelist Will Heinrich and the project is currently in development with producers Dave Saltzman, Vinay Singh, and Danielle DiGiacomo.
NANCY, PLEASE is a psychodrama/black comedy that explores obsession, self-righteousness, and the perverse allure of victimhood in New Haven, CT. Relentless and darkly comic, NANCY is a trenchant genre-bender that combines heightened naturalism with elements of the macabre and surreal. The film dramatizes how a seemingly mundane conflict can – in the proper psychological soil – evolve into something dangerous and explosive, and how passivity and misplaced idealism can lead to horrific consequences (see the full synopsis below).
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
We are right on the verge of shooting NANCY, PLEASE. The shoot is scheduled to start on October 25 with a wonderful cast and first-rate crew, but we are $10,000 short of our budgetary goal. 10K may not sound like much in the movie world, but on a very low budget production like ours, it's critical – the difference between moving full-steam ahead and slamming on the brakes. So we're in search of that last 10 grand to push the project over the line and allow us to make a terrific movie.
The Nancy Team is comprised of experienced industry professionals with excellent track records for getting films made, and made well, with some of the finest in the business. We are extremely passionate about NANCY, PLEASE and are completely committed to making the most of all resources pledged to the project and generating an outstanding product. After all, we have reputations to uphold!
WHAT YOU GET:
Should you wish to contribute to NANCY, PLEASE, we would be forever grateful. But it's is not just gratitude that we offer! Donors will also receive tokens of our appreciation in the form of a number of desirable rewards (see the right-hand sidebar for our offerings).
For more info on the project, please check out our Facebook page. If you're curious, we'd also be happy to send along a full script or further informational materials. Furthermore, we encourage you to check out some of Andrew Semans's previous work HERE .
If you wish to support NANCY, PLEASE, but are not in a position make a donation, you can help by forwarding this page to any friends, family, or magnanimous associates that you think may be interested.
Thanks so much for your support!
All the best,
The Nancy Team
NANCY, PLEASE tells the story of Paul Brawley, a young, gifted, aimless PhD candidate at Yale University. Paul has just moved into an apartment with his competent, pragmatic girlfriend, Jen, and is struggling to complete his dissertation before embarking on a career in academia. Adulthood looms; responsibility beckons.
There’s just one snag: as Paul is unpacking his belongings, he discovers that something has been left behind. A seemingly inconsequential object, but one Paul feels is of great importance to his dissertation and, therefore, to his future: a battered, personally annotated hardcover copy of 'Little Dorrit' by Charles Dickens. He will have to retrieve it from his former roommate – the obstinate, casually sinister Nancy.
Paul contacts Nancy, but she will not cooperate. She blithely thwarts Paul’s clumsy and increasingly frantic efforts to retrieve his book. What should be the simplest of errands becomes intolerably difficult. Paul’s jocular, enabling buddy, Charlie, eggs him on, reinforcing his inflated sense of persecution. The ever-capable Jen swoops in to remedy the situation, but she, too, is stonewalled by Nancy.
Caught between an impatient girlfriend and an equally impatient thesis advisor, Paul starts to lose his grip. His annoyance turns to rage and then to obsession. As he becomes increasingly consumed with the retrieval of Little Dorrit — and with his romantic image of himself as the victim of a wanton injustice — Paul’s relationship and career unravel. Unable to accept his “defeat” at Nancy’s hands, Paul rushes headlong into a thresher of emotional torment and physical punishment.
His life will get much, much worse before it gets better.
