Almost all of my Arduino based projects start right here, with an Arduino board and a couple chunks of breadboard.
This works perfectly for exploring new ideas and concepts, but not if your working on something to keep and use over and over again. To build something to keep, I've used Vector/perf boards or designed custom printed circuit boards in the past. To help myself when building a project, I also designed a prototyping board with the microcontroller components designed into the board layout.
The prototyping boards work great, but I also wanted a design that worked as an Arduino shield. I initially thought that a shield would offer a better form factor for prototyping. I laid out the shield design and took a look.
The obvious realization was the amount of wasted board space. To make the shield more functional, I laid out the microcontroller components in the empty space. This allowed the board to be used as a shield or stand-alone.
With the design in hand, I sent it off to my board manufacturer for a small prototype run. The boards shown below are those prototype boards.
The White Bread Shield for Arduino
The White Bread Shield for Arduino is a 2.1" x 6.0" prototyping board that's compatible with the Arduino UNO style boards. The White Bread Shield is designed to be used as either an Arduino Shield or a stand-alone board. This gives you more flexibility to build projects the way you want them.
The left end of the White Bread Shield includes the shield connections and component locations for building a stand-alone board. The right end of the White Bread Shield includes a breadboard-like, prototyping area.
Some of the features of the prototyping area:
The left end of the White Bread Board allows you to mount everything you need to make the board completely stand-alone.
The White Bread Shield uses all through-hole components and connections to allow for easy construction and modification.

For the first one hundred backers, I'm offering a set of three White Bread Shields for a pledge of $12.
After the early bird specials are gone, I'm offering the same set of three White Bread Shields for a pledge of $18.
All international pledges from outside the US will require an additional $15 for shipping.

The Full Kit Add-On is an extra $20. The Full Kit Add-On provides all the components to build three stand-alone versions of the White (or Wheat) Bread Shield for Arduino. The following components and quantities are included in the Full Kit Add-On.

The Stretch Goals
I would like to introduce the Wheat Bread Shield for Arduino. It only makes sense that if there's a White Bread Shield, there should be a Wheat Bread Shield. The 3.1" x 6.5" Wheat Bread Shield has twice the 5-tie-points of the White Bread Shield.
The Wheat Bread Shield has all the same features of the White Bread Shield with more prototyping area and buses that extend near the I/O pins.
The stretch goals are based on the number of backers at the end of the Kickstarter campaign.
500 BACKERS: Each backer will receive TWO Wheat Bread Boards for Arduino in addition to their original reward.
1000 BACKERS: Each backer will receive THREE Wheat Bread Boards for Arduino in addition to their original reward.
Risks and challenges
I have used my board supplier many times over the last couple years with very good results. The boards are always of high quality and delivered on time. However, there is always the risk I will have to change board suppliers. If so, I will have to do a prototype run to verify quality before ordering the final run. This could push the schedule back a couple weeks. I feel this risk is very low and I will deal with it if it occurs.
Otherwise, I feel confident that with your support I'll get the rewards out on time and into everyone's hands. I can't wait to see what projects people use the White Bread Shield for.
