About this project
HELP US FLIP THE TRADITIONAL DISTRIBUTION MODEL ON ITS HEAD
So far we’ve been stunned by the overwhelmingly positive response to this micro-budget fourthwall film, and we’re thrilled to be getting a theatrical release on Sept. 24th. But to keep this film completely independent, we need to cover licensing, promotion, replication, and costs to get the director to each city (the film prompts A LOT of questions).
The art-house theaters have shown us some real love for the film, and we want to reciprocate (we’re still filling some dates if you’re a programmer). If we can’t make this campaign work, the director will have to sell his car and put the rest on credit cards to cover the loss! Bikes are not generally safe in Los Angeles.
So we’re tapping into cinema lovers that want to be on the forefront of something new. We’re giving you the option to pick up one of a small number of advanced release DVDs. You can say “I knew it when!” and blog/tweet/yell before the general public can get their hands on it after September 24th (and much later for DVD/VOD). Or even better, you can become a producing partner on FrICTION before the big release.
Here’s the story with that: If you come on-board at the $100+ level, your name will appear in the official credits for the theatrical release and the official DVD release (including the copy you receive).
For $500+, you’ll get a producer credit that will be featured on imdb. The film is getting a lot of interest, and will have continued content featured on sites like apple, hulu, yahoo, aol, rottentomatoes, and more. Not only will it be fun to talk about at parties, you’ll help us prove a new model of independent distribution and save the director from certain car-tastrophe!
ALSO, if the director comes to your city, for anyone donating $100 or above, you’ll get a chance to hang out after the screening and pick the director’s brain over drinks. Ouch! So please support this film. If we don’t hit our large 20k target, your donation won't count.
Flicksided calls FrICTION "the best film so far this year" heralding it as “a cinematic experience so unique there is nothing out there to compare it to.” And Cynthia Corral of Metblogs says FrICTION is "An enigma wrapped in a mystery and possibly wrapped in bacon.”
Taking unconventional storytelling to another level, filmmaker Cullen Hoback (Monster Camp, 2007) travels to a private high school where he writes a script about a real couple and the student who comes between them. However, the scripted love triangle soon tangles with reality. In the face of teenage confusion and hormones, façades fall to true feelings, hidden truths are revealed and the thin line between fiction and reality starts to blur. Weaving the original “intended” film with rehearsals and documentary elements, FrICTION breaks the wall that separates fiction from reality, challenging the very real lives of everyone involved. What remains is a one-of-a-kind story that will leave you guessing long after its shattering conclusion.
The San Jose Mercury says it's “sure to leave you eager to mull it over with a friend or two."

DISTRIBUTION (a note from the director)
We have been offered distribution by smaller houses, a goal which used to be shared by most independent filmmakers. However, I learned with my film Monster Camp that once you sign away your film, a lot of things get outside of your control; both creatively and financially. Distributors can take what they want, manipulate expenses, and not follow through on promises.
I don't want to see that happen with FrICTION. We had so many talented people donate unbelievable amounts of time and energy to get this film where it is today. That's why I've decided to take a new approach, one that banks entirely on the enthusiasm and support that comes from art-seeking filmgoers.
HOW IT WILL WORK
DVDs will be mailed on the day of the theatrical release at the $25 level, or 3 weeks before the theatrical release at the $35 level. There will only be 1,000 ADVANCED RELEASE EDITION DVDs in circulation, and you will get it months before the general public has access!
Producer tiers, special, and extra special thanks will all be included on the advanced and official release of the FrICTION DVD, and all of the producer credits will be updated on imdb and the poster.
The effect of Fourthwall Cinema is to create a more realistic experience for the audience by using naturalistic techniques and breaking the fourth wall. In many instances, it can be hard to distinguish what is real, from what is not. Films such as Paper Heart, The Hole Story, and Paranormal Activity embraced some of these tenants, and more films are coming out that could be categorized as Fourthwall.
BRING FrICTION TO YOUR CITY
Be sure to visit www.openindie.com/film/friction, signup for the site, and request FrICTION in your area. It's a great new model that will help us gauge if there are additional cities we should be bringing FrICTION to. And be sure to tell your friends! Word of mouth is the only way we can get FrICTION to a theater near you.
