Kickstarter Project Update #6: Improved Pen Tip Machining

Short version, the Early-Bird pens are coming along. The project closes soon and thank you so much to everyone who's backed us. Just so you know, I'm hustling it in the shop to get you the pens as soon as possible and still trying to tweak small things here or there to make them even better than advertised ("It slices, it's dices... oh wait, it's a pen!").

Want to know how it's going back in the shop? Keep reading.

So... admittedly, every once in a while one of my friends is right about some machining advice (and usually, they don't let me forget it). In this case by bro-ski Rick from ZeroFeud Spinners convinced me to quit fighting the mill work-holding and try running the pen tips complete on the lathe. It took me half-a-day of moving tools around, altering the programs and another day to writer and dial in the pick-off and sub-spindle portion then proof everything but... man, they look great. Here, see for yourselves:

I know, these looks really good, right? Not only that but they fit and feel amazing. I have to admit that every once in a while even Rick gets one right (well, probably weekly but I don't want to swell his ego too much... you know how machinists are).

If you want want to see the actual changes on the lathe including the pick-off and how close the threading tool has to get to the sub-spindle collet (I did the math at least 3 times to make sure there was enough space, ran everything slowly to proof it and I still almost p!$$3d myself the first time this ran with full rapids) check the video below:

What does that mean? It means we're cooking with gas here people (well... it's all electric but you know what I mean)! Machines are running, pens are being made. Thanks to everyone backing this project I'll be ordering additional stock and getting these wonderful pens into your loving hands (these are my babies, considering how much work is going into these I really hope you guys enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them).

Stay tuned for more updates people!
