Kickstarter Project Update #5: Shop Visit at Tactile Turn
I had the chance to visit by buddy Will Hodges at Tactile Turn this week. The custom pen maker community is fairly small and Will and I have been friends for a few years now after meeting at BLADE Show some years ago. We share not only a love of machining, cars and pens but we both also have great hair (although I can't grow a beard to save my life). The only catch is that he's just outside of Dallas so it requires a flight for us to go grab lunch (but he knows all the killer ramen places in town so it's totally worth it). Despite the distance he's been bugging me to see his new shop and I thought I'd finally oblige.
After stopping by I can now see why we has so excited to show it off. Will's previous shop was a bit cramped at only 1,000 sq ft but the new building has room to spare, over 7,000 sq ft it! Even better, the centrally located office allows him to see what's going on without having to run out to the shop floor every 5 minutes. The man works hard and it's wonderful to see a friend's business grow and thrive. Plus, he let me drive his new Ford Raptor and the thing is SICK!
I'm back in the shop this morning and it was nice to see that Tom ran a bunch of pen blanks while I was out so we're still moving forward. After lunch I'll start turning some of those blanks into pens today and this weekend. I think the new jaws came in as well so I'll cut some fresh soft-jaws for the pen tips (out of steel this time). Since the project is almost done and I have some idea of how much material we'll need I went ahead and ordered some more Ti and Zr, it should be coming next week and I think the Cu shipment is on the way as well so we'll keep cracking on those early bird pens.
