Filmmaker Drew Stone to direct biopic of Michael Alago, the music executive responsible for signing Metallica, White Zombie and others.
This film will tell the uniquely American story of Michael Alago’s journey from humble roots in Brooklyn, into the netherworld of downtown New York’s music and arts scene in the 1970s and 1980s.
Alago rose from running the Dead Boy’s fan club to becoming a live booker at the legendary Ritz nightclub and then onto a storied A&R career at Elektra Records, Geffen Records and Palm Pictures, where he signed and executive produced acts as diverse as Metallica, White Zombie, Flotsam and Jetsam, PiL, Cyndi Lauper and Nina Simone.
The story covers the crazy glory days of the music business as well as how Michael survived the late 90s industry downturn and re-invented himself successfully as a visual artist, poet and published photographer. Viewers will also journey through the nightclubs, underground haunts and uptown parties of a long-changed New York art scene in its creative and decadent heyday.
Stone’s film will also tackle how Alago succeeded professionally as a Gay man in a metal music sub-culture known for its perceived homophobia. And how sobriety re-focused Michael’s creative vision and drove his successful re-invention as an artist himself.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
- Music clearance. Given the incredible artist roster Michael Alago worked with, we'd like the film to include a deep selection of music that spanned his career's associations and signings. Until production is complete, we will not know the complete list of tracks desired for lisc., who the rights holders for both "sides" (publishing and masters) are, and if we can come to terms within our budget.
- Stock footage clearance and photo lisc. Again, given the nature of the musical and creative moments Michael was part of, many taking place over 20 years ago, tracking down and securing images, video and usage rights creates both a challenge and a risk. Alago has a deep trove of personal ephemera we have access to.
In both cases, the Director and Executive Producer are well versed in such issues and have dealt with them deeply in their long careers in filmmaking and advertising/marketing as well as their musical endeavors. Both the Director and the Executive Producer have proven track records creatively resolving such negotiations and bringing films and marketing campaigns to air/sale.
