What is Girls Rock Camp NL?

Girls Rock NL is a non-profit organization that teaches girls and gender non-conforming youth ages 8-16 to play rock music and builds self esteem through an annual week long summer camp and a series of workshops and activities throughout the year. These activities are open to youth in Newfoundland and Labrador. Girls Rock NL fosters confidence, leadership, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration through music and performance, empowering youth and womxn and encouraging social change.

Research shows that around puberty a large percentage of young womxn hit a “confidence gap” where their self esteem plummets drastically and they feel much less secure about their abilities, activities they formerly loved and enjoyed, and about themselves in general.

Girls Rock NL fosters confidence, leadership, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration through music and performance.  At Girls Rock NL's summer camp, campers will form bands, write songs, and perform at a final showcase. Bands are coached by some of Newfoundland and Labrador's most exciting womxn musicians who teach campers how to play an instrument and be in a band. No musical experience is necessary! Complementing the music component, Girls Rock NL offers fun opportunities for campers to speak with and listen to local musicians, take part in leadership workshops, and make new friends in a safe and encouraging environment.

Our Mission

The very first Girls Rock Camp was held in 2001 in Portland, Oregon. The camp stemmed from a Women's Studies project that founder Misty McElroy completed as part of her studies at Portland State University. Since then, camps have spread around the world popping up in Canada, Sweden, Iceland, and Brazil. Each camp is independently run, but volunteers share resources and ideas through the international Girls Rock Camp Alliance. As members of the worldwide Girls Rock Camp Alliance and share its values:

 • We value the power of music as a means to create personal and social change;

 • We value efforts that actively expand opportunities for womxn of all ages; • We value positive approaches to fighting sexism;

 • We value integrity, honesty and respect;

 • We value appropriate sharing of resources, cooperation, and collaboration;

 • We value using our collective voice to further our mission; • We value diversity.

 • We value contributing a womxn’s voice to the male dominated music industry.

Girls Rock NL strives towards building a supportive community of girls, gender non-conforming youth and womxn by providing opportunities to learn, explore, and empower themselves and each other through musical expression and education and to rock out in all aspects of their lives.

 Your donation will go toward covering:

 • Scholarships: Through this campaign you can choose to sponsor a camper or an entire band, or add to our scholarship fund - helping us offer more subsidized spots so ALL girls can rock out without cost being an issue.

 • Gear: We want everyone to be able to participate so we do not require campers to bring their own instruments. We rent instruments for our campers (and use and maintain gear that has been donated!)

 • Picks, tuners, patch cords, drumsticks, guitar straps, etc!

 • Program Supplies: glitter, glue, paint, silk screen materials, camper notebooks, camper t-shirts, projector, paper, etc!

 • Snacks: Those about to rock need good food to keep em going!

• Logistics: Venue rental, insurance costs, website hosting and maintenance, graphic design and printing costs for posters, showcase programs and flyers.

• Teacher/Coach/Contributor Fees: We offer small honorariums to instrument instructors and band coaches who commit to a full-time+ week at camp! GRNL is mostly run by volunteers!

What does A Girl's Rock Camp Look Like?

Like all Girls Rock Camps around the world, Girls Rock NL is independently operated. Led by a group of professional womxn identifying folx, musicians and artists, we will bring together campers who want to have fun, make friends, and learn how to support one another. Within one week, campers with little or no musical experience will learn an instrument, take part in group discussions on important topics such as body image and leadership, and perform at weeks-end for their friends and family. Other activities include band photos, yoga, merch design, a trip to Fred’s Records, and the opportunity to meet some of St. John’s amazing musical talent like Amelia Curran, Sherry Ryan, Ilia Nicoll, and Meg Warren!

The Goal

Our goal with this Kickstarter campaign is to raise $2,000 to go toward our 2018 Summer Camp Expenses.

What Have We Done So Far?

The first two Girls Rock NL camps took place in July 2016 and 2017 in St. John's, NL and they were a HUGE success. To date we have hosted 34 campers, created 6 new bands, and had over 400 community members come out to our final shows. Girls Rock NL was awarded the Music Community MVP Award for 2016 from St. John's cultural newspaper The Overcast. This year, Girls Rock NL launched an ongoing Open Mic series for Youth 18 and under and we are currently putting together our program of activities and raising funds for this new year!

Current Initiatives

Girls Rock NL is expanding in some ways which are very close to our hearts. Last year Girl’s Rock NL tragically lost one of its founding board members, the amazing artist and curator Mary MacDonald. One of the areas Mary was interested in was making sure that people in rural communities were able to have access to creative opportunities. To further Mary’s work as a curator and to foster her vision for rural communities we will be launching the Mary MacDonald Girls Rock NL Travel Bursary during our 2018 Camp, in order to help a camper from outside St. John's participate.

Thank you!

THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to last year's Kickstarter, and who made our last two camps happen, to all past donors, volunteers and staff and THANK YOU in advance to everyone who will make this year's camp a reality, from all of us at Girls Rock NL. xo

Risks and challenges

We have run two successful camps and many Girls Rock NL initiatives to date and have broad base of knowledge amongst our organizing team that is connected throughout the downtown cultural sector and therefore are very confident in our event's success. With each coming year we are working to make this project even more sustainable.

As feminists, we believe in creating a safe and welcoming community for everyone. We want to be active makers of creative safe spaces for womxn of all ages.

If you are interested in supporting Girls Rock NL in another way through financial or in-kind donations (musical instruments, volunteer time, food, other products) simply spreading the word to help build our community or and/or joining our newsletter please contact girlsrocknl@gmail.com.
