The Story:
PC594: The Art of Rebellion, follows the life and art of Lydia Emily, an LA-based artist, activist and mother. Lydia Emily’s art can't be ignored. With it, she gives voice to the silenced, embracing subjects that are often overlooked. And while her work shocks and confronts on the walls of American cities, Lydia Emily disarms everyone around her with humor and endearing charisma. More than an artist, at her core, she is a rule-breaker. She was told her art would never hang in galleries and she was told street art was for men but Lydia Emily has never let limits stop her.
She's even been breaking the rules when it comes to Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Lydia was diagnosed with primary-progressive MS three years ago, which means that her condition will only worsen. But this doesn't dampen her rebellious spirit. Lydia rebels against the idea that because she's been hit with hardship, she should give up. That because she has been diagnosed, she should be devastated. That because she is weak, she has no voice. Lydia continues to create art and spread a message even while she struggles to hold a paintbrush on her own. And despite all of this, her sense of humor never dulls.
Lydia has been nothing but an inspiration to us at Bluprint while we've filmed her for the last 3 years. Anyone feeling small, sick or weak can look to Lydia's journey for encouragement and remember that they too still have a voice. We need to finish this film because Lydia's message is too important to go unheard. Help us finish our documentary feature film and you'll be helping us raise awareness and funds to find a cure.
Lydia Emily's abiding resilience is probably best captured by something she said after she finished a two-storey MS mural in downtown LA. Leaning on her cane, Francis, she said defiantly, "I may have MS but MS doesn't have me" and that's the spirit that represents this entire film project.
Bluprint Films is an independent film production company that makes social impact documentary and narrative films.
Bluprint Films has a strong track record of producing and releasing high profile films that contribute to social change. Bluprint’s previous documentary, PLAYGROUND (produced by Abigail Disney, George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh) was one of the first to comprehensively examine the rising and insidious trends of child sex trafficking in America and has reached audiences around the world. The company’s short nonfiction film about a sex trafficking survivor, JESSICA’S STORY, was screened at CHIME FOR CHANGE, a concert event for 50,0000 and broadcast around the world that was headlined by Beyonce and Salma Hayek and raised millions of dollars for programs that support girls and women. Bluprint also has a number of narrative features in development.
Risks and challenges
We know it takes a village to make a successful documentary film. Our last feature-length documentary, PLAYGROUND: The Child Sex Trade in America, was completed because of a network of generous and talented friends and supporters and PC594 will be no different.
Thanks to the generous support of Chicken & Egg, the Pioneer Fund and a few individual donors we raised enough money to complete 90% of the film’s production. That includes over 270 hours of Lydia, shot over the past 3 years. Now we need your help.
For our first funding goal, we need to raise an immediate $30,000 to cover the final film shooting, and to bring on a full time editor and part-time assistant editor to begin crafting Lydia's story.
It will take 8-9 months for the editorial team to lock picture, which will cost $160,000. In addition to the edit, we will still need funds for all aspects of post production, including color correction, audio mix, and beautiful film score, followed by a global outreach campaign. But let’s hit our $30,000 mark first!
We are trying to finish the edit by the Fall of 2016, in time for festival season to increase the reach of the film and share Lydia's story as far and wide as possible. $1 can help us reach that goal.
