Runner's Republic was born from hearing stories from my marathoning friend Jody. I loved the idea of a group of badass marathon runners holding their own during an Apocalypse. It's not the zombies I love (I'm a chicken when it comes to the undead) but what people become during a crisis.
Being second generation Muslim-Canadian I wanted to make a film where I could relate to the characters. There are three South Asian characters in the film - Damon, Rashaad and Sai. No cliched stories or references to arranged marriage, accents or goofy side kicks. They are not killed off early in the film. It is a unique take and really fun! If you like what you are hearing we would really appreciate your support!!
This film takes place in 2020, 3 years into a zombie apocalypse. Damon and Jody are marathon runners making their way home on a back country road. They come across Rashaad, a film-maker who is is unarmed and alone. Rashaad explains he used to have a group in town but a love triangle between his friends resulted in a fatal end.
As they get to know each other, cocky Damon, gentle Rashaad and tough Jody find the path becoming more difficult as they get closer to their destination. Their world begins to unravel and they find themselves surrounded by enemies.
As serious as it sounds we balance it out with humour in order to create a film that is light and entertaining.

Risks and challenges
We've set the dates for filming late September so we hopefully catch some lovely fall light and nice weather before things start to cool down. The actors on board are all aware of our shooting dates and have set those days aside. We've begun production, out of pocket for some of our props i.e. zombie vehicles and guns.
Jamie and I have flexible enough schedules that if we can't shoot in the fall (if something were to happen) then we will plan filming in the Spring. This however, is just a back up. We will keep you updated on any changes or problems that come up. For now everything is running on schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
