THANK YOU PATRICK SHAUGHNESSY AND SECTION 8 for all their kindness and hard work with my wonderful video. From the bottom of my heart.
My name is Joey Abarta and I am a full time musician playing the uilleann pipes, the national bagpipe of Ireland. I currently live, perform, and teach in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
My goal is to release an album of solo uilleann piping. As a piper, my musical inspiration comes from an older generation of pipers whose style both incorporated the whole of the instrument and was built on a legacy of heavy solo performance. A lot of these gentlemen were active in the nineteenth and at the turn of the twentieth century and their rich recorded legacy has deeply influenced me. What I plan to do is record twelve tracks of traditional dance tunes and song airs that both preserves this older approach to playing pipes and reflects my own stylistic approach to it, developed over my years of playing, teaching and touring.
I am planning to have this solo effort in time for a summer release and I'm really excited for you to be a part of it, so please read on.
WHY A KICKSTARTER, YOU SAY?
Simply put, I thought this would be a great way to raise the money I need to complete this project. Kickstarter gets folks (like yourself) involved in the arts in a very direct way and personal way, resurrecting the old fashioned system of patronage – it's a "people helping people" approach that got people excited about the arts. And the end result, if things go as planned? Everyone gets what they want: I get a CD and my supporters get a CD (or more), so Kickstarter's a win-win all around.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT AMOUNT?
Turns out, it's costly to make a professional level recording! So far, several of my generous and talented friends have helped me with in-kind support (i.e. production, graphic design, art and photography services), which has greatly reduced my costs. However, I still need a few bucks to get things done and ultimately, my album into your hands.
Discussing my needs with Jim Prendergast (Mill Pond Studio's proprietor and engineer) and Dan Neely (the album's producer), we've determined that $3500 is the amount I will need to budget to meet the project's outstanding costs. Breaking these costs down, I will need $1900 for the recording, mixing and mastering, $1250 for manufacturing and an allocation of about $350 to help cover Kickstarter's 5% fee, Amazon Payment's fee and the shipping costs I'll incur with reward fulfillment. It's a large amount for me as an individual, but a very reasonable amount if we all work together.
Risks and challenges
A professional musician is faced with many challenges, a traditional artist with more, and uilleann pipers with even more. I am taking a huge leap of faith that people will enjoy my music enough to help support such a big project. I feel that the last five years of my musical life is building up to this, and it will be a real treasure for me to have a snapshot of my music and life to look back upon in the future. I have strong feelings that if you are you and don't try to be anyone else, people will recognize and appreciate what you have to offer. I have a great team working with me to bring this album to fruition on budget and in a timely and professional manner so I'm not worried about finishing the project. All I need is people's good faith and support – with it I'll be able to put out the album I know I have in me.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
