“Parallel” is the story of a young man named Edgar Roberts. Edgar is from our world, that is to say he is a real person. During an altercation with a homeless man, who we later learn is a dark wizard named Terminus, the two men are sucked into an alternate reality. In this new reality, Edgar and Terminus both have powers and quickly discover, they’re not the only ones.
At the start of the war in Afghanistan, strange occurrences began where people began to display abilities which quickly grew to manifestations of elemental powers; Earth Wind, Fire, Water and Aether (Chi). The world shortly became aware that angels and demons were fighting a war and that humanity was caught in the middle. There were of course, those who wanted to use their new powers for personal gain and evil, but there were also those who wanted to use their powers for good. And so the Demonic Response Unit was formed.
It is a small squad of elementals (As they are commonly called) who find Edgar and help him begin to master his powers. Having done so, Edgar joins the squad (A super powered extension of the D.R.U.) as they begin to track down the Warlock Terminus. This is a key plot point because both Edgar and Terminus, being from another reality, are not bound by the natural limitations of this reality and therefore have near limitless power. After months of searching, hoping all the while that they can find Terminus before he discovers his potential to the ruin of all, Edgar and co. finally confront him, his band of mind controlled slaves and a host of demons. At the apex of battle it is finally revealed that Terminus is Edgar, or rather the negative manifestation of Edgar, and therefore Edgar cannot defeat him as well as send him back to their reality while remaining himself; he must also return. Once again in our world, Edgar wakes up to find that he has been in a motorcycle accident, that everything that happened was in his head and that Terminus, was actually just a homeless man he saw on the street. In the final panel however, we see that one of Edgar’s eyes is glowing, suggesting that he can in fact return to the Parallel reality.
