Explore Campaign Finance Launch!

I’m extremely excited to announce the official launch of Explore Campaign Finance! With this tool, understanding who funds political campaigns is more accessible than ever before.

Check it out here: http://www.explorecampaignfinance.com/

As a Kickstarter backer, you made this whole project possible, so again, I just want to say thanks. It took a bit longer than expected, but because of your support this site is now a reality.

This tool is a huge improvement over what’s out there for finding out who funds politicians. It makes it possible for everyone to explore this information at a level of detail and organizational complexity that really has only been possible for researchers with specialized database skills. Now anyone can see every single contribution to presidential candidates and members of Congress, and they can easily visualize contributions by industry and sector to help put all the information in context.

I think Explore Campaign Finance can have a big impact on the debate around the upcoming elections, and we’re going to work on getting it in front of as many people as possible. Can you help by posting a link to site on Facebook or Twitter?

With money in politics as a major theme in the elections, this could have a major impact on the elections in November. I am super excited about the potential for Explore Campaign Finance to help journalists, voters, and everyone else be better informed about who’s funding the candidates.

One more thing. We added a feature that lets users submit their findings on a politician’s’ contributions and get them posted on that politician’s page. It can be anything... a change in contribution levels from an industry, a contribution from a noteworthy individual, or some observation on how contributions correlate with their positions. I’d love to have you poke around and submit your findings. Just click on the “user submissions” link at the top of every politician page.

Again, thank you so much for your support. This wouldn’t be possible without you!

Congrats on completing the project! Great job! Is there a way to learn which politician I "sponsored" since I didn't specify anyone in particular. Just curious. Thanks.

@dave Those are actually not duplicates. You can donate a limit of $2,700 per election, which means you can donate $2,700 for the primary, and $2,700 for the general election. The same people are probably writing two different checks, one for each election.

I see a lot of duplicate entries like this: http://www.explorecampaignfinance.com/politicians/N00000019-Hillary-Clinton#group/combined/independent/false/display/total/cycle/2016/sector/all/contributions/Unknown

There are a bunch of $2700 donations entered twice from the same donor on the same date.
