Ritual Abuse Tarot is a dark, satirical tarot deck featuring 78 original illustrations by Ryan Sheffield (me). The project has been a labor of love six months in the making, created as an homage to artist Stephen Gammell (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), who gave me a childhood's-worth of nightmares and, most importantly, inspired me to make art.
UPGRADE! (June 18, 2014)
Now that the kickstarter is closing in on $10,000, I want to show my gratitude by buying an upgrade for your decks. Rather than the cardboard tuck boxes, I'm going to spring for labeled metallic tins and larger instruction manuals! Anyone who backed this project (or backs it before it closes) will get the upgrade. If, for whatever reason, you prefer the cardboard tuck box, please let me know so I can accommodate you. Thank you all so much! This whole experience has been truly incredible!
Thanks to the amazing response I've gotten to the deck, I've decided to offer some add-on rewards for backers. To claim one, simply go to Manage My Pledge and increase your pledge by the amount specified. I'll send out surveys after the Kickstarter ends to ensure that everyone gets the rewards they're owed.
Add-ons for the $15 tier and above:
-Add $30 for an 18x24 signed poster of the card drawing of your choice. The posters are printed on semi-gloss satin-finish poster paper and sold unframed but carefully rolled.
Add-ons for the $35 tier and above:
-Add $25 for a second copy of the Ritual Abuse Tarot deck. (limit 1 per backer)
How the funds will be used:
The deck, box design and instructions are all complete; I simply need to raise the necessary funds to get them printed. I've already made test prints of all three components to ensure quality, so once I have the funding, all I have to do is place the orders.
I'm asking for $5500, which would cover the production cost of 350 decks. This includes all 78 cards printed on high-quality linen cardstock (310 gsm), as well as a professionally-printed cardboard tuck box and a 22-page instruction manual. I plan to sell the decks in my Etsy shop and, hopefully, in local bookstores and game stores here in D/FW.
More details on Reward #5:
Reward #5 includes one of the original signed charcoal drawings used to make the tarot cards. The Minor Arcana drawings are on 11"x14" bristol paper, but the Major Arcana drawings were cut (poorly) from larger sheets of bristol and have somewhat irregular edges and sizes. They can easily be trimmed to make the edges straight without damaging the drawing itself. (The original drawings do not have the black border or the text.)
The following drawings are available for backers to choose from (click on a title below to see a photo):
- The World - The Hierophant - The Lovers - The Sun - The Tower - The Star - The Moon - The Hanged Man - Two of Wands - Three of Wands - Four of Wands - Ten of Wands - Ace of Swords - Four of Swords - Six of Swords - Eight of Swords - Two of Pentacles - Three of Pentacles - Four of Pentacles - Five of Pentacles - Six of Pentacles - Nine of Pentacles - Knight of Pentacles - Queen of Pentacles - King of Pentacles - Ace of Cups - Four of Cups - Six of Cups - Seven of Cups - King of Cups
Risks and challenges
Since the project is entirely complete aside from printing, the only setbacks I can foresee would involve production/shipping delays on the part of the printing companies I'll be working with. I have used them in the past and had nothing but good results, so I don't anticipate there will be any issues. On the off-chance that any such setbacks do occur, I'll ensure they're resolved as soon as possible. The worst case scenario would be a slight delay in the shipping of rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
