About

I love nature and exploration so I take every available opportunity to go and see iconic wildlife above and under water. I am also a passionate photographer and all these new technologies are extremely exciting to play with! These two passions have taken me to many natural places over the years. Here are a couple of my favourite images, many more can be found here.

But the expedition that remains my best experience to date took me to the Peruvian Amazon rainforest for 3 weeks in 2015 (story and photos on my blog here) with naturalist and members of the Matsés tribe, where I experienced a remarkable, biologically diverse ecosystem.

More importantly, I care deeply about our environment and its wildlife. So when I read those articles last year that the same area I had seen and been amazed by was under threat from oil exploration, I started to think about what I could do to help protect this rich land.

So I came up with this idea to go back there, push further into the rainforest, document every wildlife encounter, experience and emotion. But not just that! I want you to experience it in real time too! I intend to embrace innovation in imaging technologies, remote connectivity and digital distribution platforms which will allow me to take you with me on this adventure. Unlike most documentaries that are available months after the action took place, here you will be in a front seat to see it as it unfolds!

So through my eyes and lenses, I will not only show the world how wonderful this jungle is, but I will take you on that journey with me. This way, together, we will contribute our part to the big task that is ensuring the long future of the Matsés Land and the Amazon rainforest!

Oh but actually, we are not alone. We will be travelling with Jaguar Teddy the expedition mascot! It has been kindly provided by WWF for this expedition.

So now, a little bit about what we can expect to see:

- stunning immages of harpy eagles, anacondas, big cats and others wildlife

- our joys and struggles of surviving in the rainforest: building camp, navigating rivers in a dugout canoe, venturing into impenetrable jungle, finding food in the forest.

- our emotions of life in this environment, being stripped out of all comfort of modern society and contact with the outside world.

- our relationships and interactions between the expedition team members, including the stories of the Matsés tribe members.

- our challenges and difficulties of filming in this difficult environment, a little bit like a movie "making of" but embedded in the story

What do we need support for? (for a 1-month expedition)

- Expedition running costs such as staff, food (that we can bring, the rest will be found in the forest), first aid supplies, insurance, transport etc. - $8,000

- Camera arsenal to capture stunning 4K wildlife images and every second of the action -  $11,105 (that includes two action cameras, a DSLR and its telephoto lense, a drone and four remotely activated camera traps)

- Data storage capacity (lots of it as 4K files are big, and the humidity and heat of the rainforest aren't ideal for electronics so we need multiple back ups) - $4,862

- Power generators to charge all of the above - $1,000

- Cloud connection device to upload files in real time $3,326

- Other gear (tent, observation hide, backpack, GPS tracker) - $1,000

- Plus kickstarter's 10% fee, gbp/usd exchange rate of 1.38 = £23,350

Stretch goals

- Extend expedition to 2 months - £35,000

- Extend expedition to 3 months - £45,000

Risks and challenges

Equipment failure from high humidity and heat - all devices are duplicated to minimise this risk. The longer the expedition the more equipment I will take to maintain this risk low (hence the increased costs)

Physical readiness - although I already am in a good condition, I will be undertaking a specific training programme to achieve the best possible fitness.

Mental resistance in extreme conditions - previous expeditions similar to this ones give me the confidence that I can overcome the difficult times. I also am more comfortable going with the team who I already know and can rely on.

Wildlife - this is the unpredictable bit as sightings are never guaranteed. But by going to an extremely remote area that rarely see any humans and staying for up to 3 months will maximise our chances to see as many animals as possible.
