After some years of making short films about the Filipino American conditions, I am very excited to start making my very first full-length feature this year. This project, tentatively titled "Where We Are Now", extends my personal video diary format to encompass the greater collective narrative of Filipino diaspora. My video camera, now dubbed “Enrique de Malaca”, will become a vessel for my friends’ stories as it circumnavigates the world by courier. While Magellan’s westward circumnavigation is one of territorial conquest for the colonial powers, Enrique’s eastward circumnavigation will be one of reclamation; of re-establishing broken ties and rebuilding the terrain of the Filipino collective psyche.
I have selected participants from the state-run high school and college and I studied in. I believe the participants need to already know each other to some degree, as well as have shared experiences, hopes and dreams. Each participant will be given one week with the camera, after which they will send it to the next participant by courier. This goes on until the camera makes a full circuit around the world and comes back to me. The resulting compilation of vignettes will make up a 2-hour full-length documentary/visual portrait.
This filmic study does not pretend that it is a comprehensive and thorough cross-section of the Filipino population. Neither will it be an analysis of Filipino diaspora from a historical perspective; such as study would be too cumbersome and unwieldy to execute for now. However, by introducing their backgrounds and motives for moving, I hope to give a glimpse of the history behind the modern Filipino emigrant, as well as situate him/her in the world today.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge will be the actual transportation of the camera, and in fact, pretty much all of the proceeds of this fundraising will go towards the courier services to send the camera all over the world. I will be working with a preferred courier to develop a strategy to keep the camera safe during transit, as well as make sure it successfully circumnavigates the world with no hassles.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
