Introducing Rivet Pickups™
Rivet Pickups are revolutionary humbucker-sized boutique guitar pickups that use independent mini-coils™ to enhance your guitar's tone. Turn a mini-coil on to take a little bass from your neck pickup to mix into your bridge pickup. Or take a little edge from your bridge and mix it in with your neck pickup.
Mixed, matched or crisscrossed, Rivet Pickups help you find a sweet spot - that not only sounds good, but feels good to play.
Having a great balance of tone absolutely does give you a great feeling when you play. When there's just the right amount of "everything where it ought to be", your connection with your music is transcendent. (You know what we're talking about!) Rivet Pickups are solid tools for finding the balance. The patent-pending mini-coils™ are tilted so that their volume always blends beautifully with other coils - even other brands of pickups. Big tone with extra low end punch and high end edge, any time you need it. No gimmicks, no filtering, no batteries, no digital processing of any kind. All done in the blending of string groups rich in your guitar's natural fundamentals and harmonics.
We're the ones to do this.
David Petschulat, creator of Rivets, has made guitars and components over the years for many of the world's greatest artists, including Eddie Van Halen, Jackson Browne, Heart, Steve Morse, and many others. His new pickup concepts are already catching on fast with Rivets.
So who's using Rivet™ Pickups?
Our artist roster is growing fast. Players that obsess over guitar tone fall in love with Rivets. Rivets are currently being used by:
- Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse)
- Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy, Modest Mouse)
- Art Alexakis (Everclear)
- Mick Jones (Foreigner)
- Dylan Carlson (Earth)
- Jonathan Jackson (Enation, star of ABC’s Nashville)
- Dan O’Connor (Four Year Strong)
- Josh Hogan (The Mowgli’s)
- Stan Lassiter (Nashville jazz-fusion legend)
- Donnie Lee Clark (Pure Prairie League) <- in process!
- Warner E. Hodges (Jason and the Scorchers) <-in process!
- Joe Blanton (the Bluefields) <- in process!
- Jeff Erickson (10,000 Maniacs) <-in process!
Installation: do any of these look like your guitar?
You're creative. Imagine your guitar with Rivets™. Put a pair on your favorite ax to stretch for more tone. Or maybe dig an old guitar out of your closet and make it exciting to play again. Rivets™ fit perfectly into a standard humbucker-sized cavity, though replacing other size pickups will likely require some routing - a job commonly done by local guitar shops. One of our goals with Kickstarter funding is to provide slick connector boards to make wiring Rivets™ and balancing them with one another or even other pickups easy, fast, and solder-free.
What will my Rivets™ sound like?
If you can only get one reward, you might add a RIVET ‘63 in the neck position of your guitar for its glassy smooth sound, well-balanced output and delicate articulation. Turn on the RIVET '63's bass mini-coil™ to add low-end depth and harmonics to your bridge pickup! This unique combo sounds fabulous with a Strat™, Tele™, P90, or even humbucker lead pickup. It beefs up the lows but still scorches on the highs.
Add a RIVET ‘64 model pickup and you’ll get the screaming-hot snarl of a single-coil bridge pickup, with a treble mini-coil™ standing by that can be switched on at any time to thicken the high end with crunch. Throw some of that crunch at your other pickups. Transform that mushy neck humbucker you never use into an exotic sounding hybrid with low growl and a slice of stand-out highs.
Add a pair of RIVET™ PICKUPS for all the options.
Above all, Rivet™ pickups are real pickups. If you like them now, you’ll still be liking them 40 years from now. They’re durable, tried-and-true technology - just taken to new heights. In tone they have a distinct pop with a round and ringing quality. Using gentle Alnico II magnets we get softness with a bit of natural compression, sometimes referred to as flutter or cluck. The copper winding-wire is a coarser gauge and moderately wound to maintain a well-defined respect between notes within chords. Even when heavily over-driven, chords ring with noticeable stability in their notes - yet they’re dynamically responsive to the intensity of your playing such that notes fuse together well in heavy chords but resist crossing over into mush. Our patent-pending mini-coils™ add extra-punchy fundamentals and jacked-up harmonics. While your Rivets™ may sound very familiar, you’ll always know and appreciate that they can be pushed much further than conventional pickups.
What comes in each box?
- A handmade pickup produced in our shop in Franklin, TN (near Nashville)
- A web card bearing the serial number and a scratch-off hidden validation code that gets you access to the manufacturing specifications and details of your pickup from our web site
- A push/pull potentiometer to replace your tone pot, for switching the mini-coil™ of your Rivet™ on/off
- A solder-free connector card for connecting your Rivet™ into your existing controls (and even other pickups). This card will posses a couple of slick features that we plan to work out once we're funded
- A nice-looking silkscreen printed box made by us in our shop
Who are we?
Rivet Pickups are the brainchild of famed luthier David Petschulat, whose client list over the years has included Eddie Van Halen, Jackson Browne, Heart, Foreigner, Earth Wind & Fire, Blue Öyster Cult, Loverboy, Molly Hatchet, Steve Morse, and many others. Rivets are hand-made by David and his son Sam in their workshop in Franklin, TN, 20 minutes outside of Nashville.
We love Kickstarter because it gives us the chance to roll out the great sound of our pickups before we have some of the final production details finalized. We aim to make a great connector card for ease of installation, and we have some new ideas regarding the lower chassis of the pickups. Your backing of rewards gives us the opportunity to deliver on these features.
Also, Kickstarter is a place where you can cast a vote for innovation. While there are many good companies out there remaking all the classic pickups of the past, we have a different mission. We believe that just as music is evolving, it's possible for the sound and technology of music to evolve. We need your support now so that we can bring you this interesting product and more in the future.
Yes, we “made our own video” but with incredible help from so many folks that it truly became a team effort! So a huge heart-felt “thanks” out to all of the following:
- Jonas Litton and his band Backyard Beach for the cool backing tracks (done on Rivets™, of course!)
- All of the fabulous young Nashville players who visited our shop to discover Rivets™ - Glen Vollmer, Shad Teems, Hank Born, Lalo Guzman, Ben Bruce, James Black, Jamie Becker, Jake Bunnell, Alex Edwards, Ryan Hartman, Jonas Litton, Page Kelly
- Dylan Carlson of Earth for making and sending us a video clip for our artists section
- Isaac Brock and Jim Fairchild of Modest Mouse for bearing with us thru many prototype cycles
- Jonathan Jackson of the band Enation & ABC TV’s 'Nashville" for letting us crash in on paid studio time to capture some video
- Derek Steinman and Alex Alexakis of Everclear for being so quickly faithful and trusting
- Josh Hogan of the Mowgli’s for sending us the “thank you” selfie clip
- Stan Lassiter for giving us a fabulous little concert here in our shop
- Chris Stanton, local videographer who gave us helpful feedback in our darkest hour and also help shoot Jonathan in the studio
- Mark McEver for code support on our website
Risks and challenges
The goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to receive the backing needed to move RIVET™ PICKUPS beyond the research and product development phase, and into first production. While we believe first production will produce great products of consistent quality, we do also believe that successful companies never completely leave research and development behind. Great products continue to evolve and improve. RIVETS™ are essentially handmade, and we are DIY on many levels - not because we believe we should “do it all” for our ego’s sake, or even for the sake of USA production ideals, but we are DIY because we want to know our processes to know our products so that we can make them more amazing every single day.
With specific regard to RIVETS™, it will be our clear aim to provide great sounding pickups, with auxiliary components that make their installation feasible for most people.
•We are certain we can deliver your pickups. We’ve learned a lot already about making them from our R&D models, and we’re certain we can do it even better on a larger basis.
•If we get an overwhelming response to our campaign it may cause us to take longer as we learn new skills for managing large production volumes. If that should happen, please bear with us and know that despite the wait, it will cause us to be a stronger company that will in turn build, deliver and support an even better product.
•We’re certain the pickups will sound fantastic to us, but we can’t promise they’ll sound fantastic to you. We trust they will, but because we don’t know you personally, we can only hope you love them. Sorry, but should it happen that you don’t like them, we won’t have the capacity to take them back or give a refund. We don’t want you to be bummed, but small as we are right now, refunds won’t be possible.
•One of our final R&D goals to be addressed with Kickstarter funding is to push the ‘04 mini-coil™ on the bridge pickup to shift the sound even closer towards a humbucker sound when engaged. We can’t guarantee success on this, but it is a goal and there is a risk that our pickups won't sound "humbucker enough" to you. We've got some great ideas on this and can't wait to get funded to plow into it!
•Another of our final R&D goals to be addressed with our Kickstarter funding is to provide a fabulous solder-free connector card. If we cannot do so in a timely fashion, we may have to settle for a very simple connector solution, or even conventional soldering. We believe we have some great ideas that might work, but the risk to you, the backer, is that we might not be able to deliver your pickup with that one hoped-for ancillary feature.
•We have some wild pickup coil architecture and assembly technique “tweaks” in mind which we’ve pondered throughout the current R&D cycle, and which we will implement if we deem them an improvement to the product. Don’t be alarmed - your RIVETS™ will look the same when mounted, but might be structurally improved from what you see in our video shots of the shop, etc.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
