Four Dime Novels From The Old Sleuth 1896 - 1898.
This crowdfunder is to get four 120 year old pulp dime novels back into print into one book; Four Dime Novels From The Old Sleuth.
My name is Darren Nemeth and I published three other books so far. How To Film Moving Pictures in the 1910's, which was funded here successfully in early 2018, 1907 Chicago Projecting Co.'s Entertainer's Supplies Catalog No. 122; Deluxe Edition (printed in 2015) and a reprint of the 1907 pulp novel The Great Express Robbery, funded through Kickstarter in June, 2019.
Why Reprint These?
Dime novels from the 1890s are extremely scarce. Ever hear stories from older family members who regretted the loss of entire boxes of baseball cards and comic books that were thrown out? The main readers were adolescent boys who's collections oftentimes were discarded as "junk" by someone in the family. Somethings do not change! Also, the pulp paper doesn't survive well under certain conditions -- after many decades the paper can become brittle to the point they can't be read from cover to cover without shedding.
All four dime novels are from The Old Sleuth series, which numbered in the hundreds of published original and reprinted books and magazines from the 1870s into the 1910s. However, a scant few of them are available today in an easy to read form.
If this book is funded it will reprint...
- Amzi, The Detective; or, Morning, Noon and Night In New York. A Detective Tale. (1896)
- A Detective's Daughter. An Extraordinary Narrative. (1898)
- A Struggle To Win; or, A Gypsy Boy's Secret. (1898)
- Seth Bond; or, A Lost Treasure Mystery. A Startling Detective Narrative. (1898)
The plots move along swiftly, are full of action and I believe will be enjoyable to most readers.
If the funding goal is reached the pledges will pay for a print quantity of one hundred books plus the cost of shipping from the printing company.
How Was This Reprint Created?
The valuable dime novels needed to be taken apart so the pages and cover could be individually scanned at 600 dpi laying completely flat on a table scanner. The covers have been extensively retouched and readability of illegible text restored.
Most of the retouching was to reduce the yellowing on the pages, being careful that none of the printed ink was removed. Some of the characters in the printing press had too much ink and left blotches. Some were barely readable due to too little ink. These were fixed by moving legible characters from other areas of the page on top of them then erasing the surrounding smudge. The skew of the pages was also corrected and centered. With these thousands of touch-ups the easy flow of reading has been restored.
More info on how this was done will be in upcoming updates!
If funded I endeavor to restore and reprint even more crime, adventure and romance novels from the 1860's-1910's period.
