Here in Asheville, North Carolina, we have a thriving community of performers, musicians, artist and generally crafty, fun folks. Some of people's talents include juggling, acrobatics, trapeze, aerial silks, stilt walking, playing music, painting, belly dancing, tap dancing, puppeteering, harvesting herbs, helping people and so much more!! There is no lack of talent, but there is a lack of a permanent affordable space to practice and perform in!!
That's where we come in! Toy Boat Toy Boat Toy Boat is a community arts space available for studio work, practice, rehearsal, teaching, learning and performing. The Toy Boat will house several studio artists and be a home for performance groups, musicians and non-profits. The space will be set up with studios that are available for artists who want to create in a community environment. One studio will be complete with mirrors and hardwood flooring for dance classes and workshops. One studio will be soundproofed to create a band practice space that is available and affordable. There will be an open library room with a large table where groups can have their monthly meetings or community processes. The rest of the space will be an open practice space for juggling, aerial artists, acrobatics and more! There will be a stage and lighting and sound system to showcase the performers who practice in the space.
The Toy Boat will be open to everyone in the community and operate as a club where members can pay affordable rates to get time in the studio spaces. Having a set place to practice and perform will lift the burden that many artists find when they attempt to hone their crafts in Asheville.
The Toy Boat will need to be a big space with high ceilings. That is where you come in! We need to find a great space, in a good location that we can shape to be what the community needs! The funds from this Kickstarter will go to help rent a building, build a stage, build studios, acquire lights and sound systems, provide classes, and more!
The Toy Boat will also serve as a home for the Runaway Circus, a local performance group. Once a year the Runaway Circus picks up the Loose Cabooses and together an all volunteer cast and crew put on a full length community show that benefits local non-profits. Some other group also involved are Forty Fingers and a Missing Tooth Juggling Troupe, Sugarfoot Serenaders, Prison Books, Kid's Coop, Bicycle Recyclery, Sassafrass Health Collective, Open Umbrella Collective, the Flood Gallery, Odyssey Community School, the Vanishing Wheelchair, Nuestro Centro, The Women's Congress, and more!!
Help us bring out community together through the arts! You can help by donating money to this fantastic project! Check out what we do now, and just think of the possibilities once we have a permanent home!!!
