TurtleStitch is ...

  • an award-winning, free resource for teaching creative coding and for making unqiue textile designs
  • engaging boys and girls through a new approach to learn coding
  • re-interpreting traditional craft in the 21st century, bringing together textiles and code

TurtleStitch is a graphical programming language which allows you to code patterns for embroidery machines. It is free and runs in the web browser, you can start right away. It's easy to use, so you don't need to have coded ever before to begin using it and creating beautiful and exciting patterns. If you have coding experience, you can dive deep into the capabilities of TurtleStitch.

You can share your embroidery code on TurtleStitch's online platform and also explore or build upon the code of others. Use a standard embroidery machine locally to embroider your favourite textiles. Now you can wear your code!

TurtleStitch is inspired by MIT Scratch, builds upon Berkeley Snap! and we collaborate closely with Beetleblocks.

What was our motivation to create and offer TurtleStitch?

We did the first steps in project development out of curiosity. Realising how many different possibilities emerged out of creating line-based embroidery designs, we simply couldn't stop exploring further. As we have been active in Software Design for children in earlier projects, we saw a big potential to engage boys and girls through a new approach to learn coding.

We decided to go for a block-based coding interface to open up the pattern design for beginners. Additionally, we developed a sharing platform for the embroideries, so that everybody can scroll through designs and learn from and build upon others code.

It is great to see that users from all over the world have started to use the tool and our userbase is continuously growing. Based on a lot of user feedback in workshops and online, we know where to improve the functionality and the learning potential of the tool.

What will the money be spent on?

The money we are raising will be used for our new Release „Whizzy Needle.“ We collected a lot of user feedback from our international users of different professional backgrounds.

For the new release we plan to eliminate some known bugs and we are excited to start working on new features and enhancements, such as:

  • implementing multi color support
  • implementing fonts, to let people more easily express in words (label their designs)
  • implementing more specific embroidery related commands
  • improve multiple language support
  • geometry cache, to speed up

Meeting other experienced TurtleStitchers this summer at the international Scratch Conference at the MIT in Boston, we'll have the chance to discuss strategic and paedagogical orientation in the TurtleStitch Software development. The outcome of this discussions will flow into our new version of TurtleStitch:

  • extend our tutorial resources
  • make it easier for educators and designers to join the community and start creating
  • extend connections to computer science related curriculum

For the delivery of our backers give-aways, test the newly developed software and improve sustainability of the project

  • Scale-up our embroidery resources (hardware)

We've just founded an non-profit organisation as a host for TurleStitch. An international board will help to keep the focus on developing a permanent educational online resource.  There are some scenarios for a long-term TurtleStitch development and support already being worked on, but in the meantime, we need crowd support! The Crowdfunding campaign is a bridging financing to keep our workflow up and running and take the next big step.

What is your motivation to support us?

  • You support us to improve and maintain Turtlestitch, an award-winning, free resource for teaching creative coding and for making unqiue textile design.
  • After getting a lot of feedback from users all over the world, we are now ready to take the next step in making Turtlestitch more engaging, more fun and more useful. Your support will enable us to implement what we learned from the community and put it into our new release.
  • Become part of a vibrant, creative community of coders and makers, share your designs with others to learn and educate.
  • Contribute to re-interpreting traditional craft in the 21st century, bringing together textiles and coding.
  • Get one of the exclusive TurtleStitch designed Give Aways. This is the first time that we offer direct, international distribution. Hand-machine made in Vienna and shipped to you wherever you are.

What are people saying about TurtleStitch?

Joek van Montfort (Educator, Artist, Scratch-Conference Co-Organiser Barcelona, Amsterdam, Bordeaux)

"When I first learned of Turtlestitch, now three years ago, I immediately realized the power of the idea and invited Andrea to share her work at the Amsterdam Scratch conference. Since then I’ve seen both product and community growing. Only recently I realized the fun and learning could be in it for me too. Since a few weeks, I’ve access to an embroidery machine and it brings me tons of hard fun. It’s great to personalize some of my textiles, it’s rewarding to search for code matching patterns of my imagination."

Daniel Seitz (medialepfade.org @ Open Educational Resources Festival 2017, Berlin/DE)

Turtelstitch provides an easy access to programming and computational thinking, which are so valuable in our society today. At the same time, the entire creative and generative potential of artisanal textile production is opened up. With Turtlestitch we are pleased to award a worthy prize winner in the strong field of the category The Great Wide Open.

 Team

Andrea is an artist and project developer. She has more than 10 years of experience developing open source software for children and adults. Currently she is Codeweek.eu Ambassador for Austria. Andrea has worked with textile since her teenage years and now combines her two passions in TurtleStitch.

Michael is an artist and software developer. He is a pioneer in generative photography and he is currently focusing on  data design and visualization. You can find his most recent project combining soccer and climate data on worldcup.fooviz.xyz. And, of course, he is the lead developer here at TurtleStitch. http://m.ash.to

Tina is graphic and textile designer and visual artist. If things threaten go out of hand visually, Tina steps in and brings order to the chaos. And what beautiful order that is:  http://www.thkdesign.at/

Software Projects, TurtleStitch is based on:

TurtleStitch is inspired by Scratch. Like millions of users worldwide we love the tool and we love the community around. The world is a better place with Scratch in childrens hands. Thanks to Mitchel Resnick, his awesome team at the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at MIT and to the Scratch Foundation.

TurtleStitch directly builds upon Snap!. It's open license, experienced and vision-driven developers, it was the choice for us to use it as a base for our software development. Thanks to Jens Moenig, Brian Harvey, Daniel Garcia and the rest of the team at Berkeley University for letting us dig into it!

Thanks to the Beetleblocks inventors, namely Bernat Romagosa, Eric Rosenbaum and Duks Koschitz. It's combination of coding and creating physical 3D objects is just mind-blowing. Should get its place in every single learning hub around the world equipped with a 3D printer.

Risks and challenges

There are always some challenges in completing a software project. But we have a very experienced team eager to continue to work on Turtlestitch, and we are part of multiple dynamic communities that support us. We are fully confident that we will be able to complete the "Whizzy Needle" release and the educational materials and release it to the public.
