WE HAVE REACHED OUR GOAL WITH 17 DAYS TO GO! Scroll a little way down the page for more about the projects stretch goal.
I just finished printing a letterpress edition of my translation of Francis Jammes' turn of the century novel Le Roman du Lievre. I am using this campaign to sell copies of this book to help fund a series of readings around the US.
I also recently finished the first book of my Held Up comic. Held Up is structurally based on Le Roman du Lievre and is strongly connected to my last five years working with the french novel.
(If you are new to Le Roman du Lievre, I have included a few short videos at the bottom of the page. Check them out).
I am really excited about the different rewards I am able to offer for your pledges (see below), including copies of Le Roman du Lievre, Held up, letterpress posters and more.THE PLAN:
Your pledges will help me afford to:
1. Tour the hand-bound, letterpress edition of Le Roman du Lievre I just finished printing (this goal has been reached).
2. If we reach $5400.00 I will Hand deliver a copy of the book to the Francis Jammes society (in the house the story was originally written in 1902) and do some research into the setting for Held Up Book Two.
Le Roman du Lievre:
In 2008 I translated Francis Jammes novel Le Roman du LIevre into English knowing no french. Over the last 5 or so years I have been working on a series of collaborative projects surrounding my translation (a group show, travel, prints, a comic...)
Over the months of June and July I hand printed a letterpress edition of my translation. With the support of the Rasmuson Foundation and the help of the community at Zygote Press in Cleveland, OH, printing was approached through a participatory process modeled after the educational philosophy of Jacques Rancière’s Ignorant Schoolmaster. Set in monotype, printed on a Vandercook press, with a cover made of handmade paper from the Morgan Conservatory, this book was constructed in a fashion equally laborious to the original translation process.
Held Up is a travel story, following the quest of a single determined adventurer as he makes his way towards a mysterious goal with equally mysterious cargo. The story shifts back and forth from this concrete quest and a dream like exploration of memory, both specific and as an organizational model.
The story is structurally modeled after Le Roman du Lievre, though it shares no characters, places, or plot elements with it.
Held Up has the same # of chapters as Le Roman du Lievre. Each chapter then draws a general theme from the original. The details (people, places, plot) are taken from the long relationship I have had with Le Roman du Lievre, its translation and a number of projects and adventures I have been a part of as a result (check out the video at the bottom of the page and www.leromandulievre.com).
Now that we have passed the initial goal of $3400 the additional funding will go toward me traveling to France to hand deliver a copy of my translation to the Francis Jammes Society. This society is located in the same house Jammes wrote Le Roman du Lievre in. If I reach $5400 I will not only hand deliver a copy of my translation, but will video tape (or maybe audio) record the awkward transaction and send a copy to all supporters. Imagine me, knowing little french, explaining to the attendant at the foundation that I translated Jammes' book not knowing the language. And if it doesn't turn out so good (I don't know how this could happen), I will put together a short comic version that makes it more enjoyable.
So how did I come to this stretch goal? I calculated that for $2000 more I can cross that ocean and make it happen. 3400 + 2000 = $5400. Anything on top of the $5400 will go towards traveling in style.
And if I make this goal, you can add $30 to any pledge and I will include a limited edition travel journal made over the course of the trip, including sketches writing comics and notes.
I will also be doing research for Held Up Book Two over the trip, so expect a bunch about that in the journal.
We have reached our first goal! If we make it to $5400 add $30 to any contribution and I will send you a copy of the travel journal that will result from this book tour.
There are a ton of options, many of which resulted from my recent residency at Zygote Press in Cleveland. Pledge to the right and look at images of the rewards below. If you don't see a combination of what you want message me. Here are some videos about the project.
First, a really brief introduction to the project I made about a year ago. Music by Lawrence Stumpf.
Esy Casey made this short video about the Return To Me tour.
Risks and challenges
I have set up the funding goal for this project to be the the minimum amount I will need to start touring Le Roman du Lievre. I hope to exceed this or to sell enough work over the tour to afford to travel to France to deliver a copy of Le Roman du Lievre to the Francis Jammes Society and to do research into Held Up Book Two. All but a couple of the rewards are already made, so this shouldn't effect anyone getting their rewards on time.
If the 2nd goal of $5400 is met, I will be putting together a travel journal. If people choose to purchase this item there is a chance it might take a bit of time to put together. I will have to keep an eye on this so as not to keep people waiting too long.
