Noble Creature Skins

Posted by Julian Gollop (Creator)

We are making an extra effort to provide some exciting new reward bonuses for backers at Wizard Lord level and above - so I would like to introduce to you the Noble Creature Skins:

If you back at Wizard Lord, you can choose a selection of 12 of your creatures to be nobles - which means that  they have more splendid weapons and attire, encrusted with gold. You will be able to select which creatures are to be ennobled, and you can change the selection before any battle. For those of you that back at Wizard King level and above, all your creatures will be noble by default, but you can also select 12 of your creatures to have Royal Skins (images to follow in a future update). These are aesthetic changes, and have no effect on the creature's abilities, but they will sure earn some respect from your less aristocratic opponents. These skins are exclusive to backers - you won't be able to earn them in game. Only the old aristocracy have this privilege.

The Hellhound is a chaotic, magical beast with the body of a large dog and three howling heads. The central head has magical eyes that can project a paralysing stare. This is a ranged magical attack that can immobilise a target creature until it manages to break free of the spell. Those of you who have played one of my other wizard themed games, 'Magic & Mayhem,' will recognise this creature from that game.

Shout outs

You really must take a look at Armello. This wonderfully enchanting game is a digital fantasy boardgame brought to life with animation everywhere - even on the cards. It has features that I really like to see - up to four players competing locally or online and procedurally generated map and quests. The team have been working for years on this game, and the quality shows. It's coming to iPad and PC/Mac/linux - DRM free. Check out the project page here.

Hero Generations

Lovingly called "The 5-Minute Civilization", Hero Generations is an Indie strategy/rogue-like about life, legacy & love from the creator of Highgrounds. You play a rapidly aging hero that explores a procedurally generated world in search of fame and a mate to settle down with before you die. After your life ends, you continue on adventuring as your child. It has been described as the offspring of Sid Meier's Civilization, Jason Rohrer's Passage, and The Legend of Zelda. Check out the project page here.

Upgrade to version .13

Posted by Julian Gollop (Creator)

This is just a technical update about the new version. It is important that you use the new client version otherwise you may experience some weird behaviour. You will see the version number on the top left of the login screen. The web version can be obtained from this link:

There are new installable versions for PC and Mac - go here for instructions.

Sincere apologies to all you linux owners. We are committed to supporting linux, but we have some problems with the network library we are using. It's possible we may have to use something else, but unfortunately this is not a quick fix. So please be patient, and we will endeavour to make the prototype available to you (even if it is after the Kickstarter campaign finishes).

The fixes in the new version are

  • Players are booted out of the game if they are inactive for one turn and they fail to click the 'I am online' button before their next turn starts
  • You can now leave a game after you have been killed. Press the button on the top left of the screen.
  • Subversion spell now correctly updates the engagement status of creatures.
  • The Low camera angle gives you a better view of the arena

Please report bugs in the bugs forum.

Thank you all for testing and being such a great community of players.

The Final Week

Posted by Julian Gollop (Creator)

Now we are entering the crucial final week of the campaign. We can do it, but it needs a big push. The prototype is now public, and we can use it to promote the campaign. You can help by distributing the web link wherever you think there might be an audience. Here it is again:

Many thanks to those of you who have been promoting it, and playing the game. I am very happy that many people seem to be enjoying it. We still have a few bug fixes and improvements to implement in the next few days, so please report any problems you find on the bug report forum.

For those of you who are now relatively experienced at playing the game, please help out new players with advice and encouragement. There will be more of them around from now on.

The next fixes we are working on are, in priority order:

  • Kicking out inactive players
  • Being able to quit the game after you have been killed
  • Some basic video options for optimising the browser version of the game
  • Fixing incorrect 'engaged to enemy' status after subverting enemy creatures

Enthusiastic backer Allen Stroud is inviting you to join in a Thunderclap. This clever idea makes use of your social media to release a simultaneous message for maximum impact. Our thunderclap is timed to go off 48 hours before our campaign ends.

Pick-ups and Interactive Elements

Chaos Reborn will feature many environment types, and the procedurally generated arenas will have a variety of interactive elements and pick-ups. One of the main types of pickup is the 'chest' - a sturdy container used to secure treasures and magical artefacts. There are two basic types of chest

  • Mundane chests: These can be opened by a wizard or any creature with hands (or other equivalent appendages). They can contain spell scrolls, which immediately add a spell to a wizards list. They can also contain special effect scrolls which will take immediate effect, and could be hazards, such as a lightning storm, or a blessing, such as summoning a magic castle around the chest. They can also contain gold and common magical equipment.
  • Magical chests: These can only be opened by wizards, and will tend to contain more powerful magical artefacts, such as spell books (which can be researched to gain new spells), magic orbs (which contain several charges of a specific spell) and more rare magical equipment.

There will also be more tactical elements you can interact with:

  • Runestones: These come in three basic types - Law, Neutral and Chaos. They will give any wizard who activates a runestone by touching it a casting bonus for spells of the corresponding alignment. More rare types of Runestone may be linked to spells of certain types, such as magical attacks, undead.
  • Doors and bridges: Doors and bridges may be opened/raised with controls, which can be activated by any creature with hands. These are generally found in citadels and towns.

Shout Outs

"Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow comes Today" is an old-school 2D point and click adventure game, featuring space-time distortions, concentration camps, a dystopian atmosphere... and a dark, bloodstained plot. The game pays homage to classic adventures ("The Secret of Monkey Island", "Day of the Tentacle") but revolves around a more mature theme, along the lines of games such as "I have no mouth and I must scream" or "Sanitarium". Demo available!!!

Kickstarter campaign:

Only 3 days left, so hurry!

What's this? Chaos Reborn's Goblins have invaded Pop-up Dungeon. Check out the Kickstarter page for this highly innovative, moddable, customisable dungeon crawler.
