“Žiga is a “Muse-ician,” one who make magic with the muses. With his mind’s eye, he has the ability, to move faster than the speed of light, to capture moments in time and through his photographs, share those moments with the world. The camera in his hands, transforms shadow and light from the common place into truly extraordinary human experiences. He is an improviser, a chronicler of life in real time, a poet, a philosopher, a free spirit, a song in anticipation of being sung. These are the very disciplines which are the essence of my musical world.”

Joe McPhee (excerpt from the text, featured in the book)

Miles Davis, Belgrade, Serbia
Miles Davis, Belgrade, Serbia

Everything started in 1986 at a Miles Davis concert in Belgrade.
I decided, then and there, I would explore the world of music and photograph its details. I also took a picture which appears on the cover of the Slovenian edition of Miles Davis’s autobiography.

“Cloud Arrangers” is the destination of my 33 years on the road as a music photographer. This book is for music, which is so important to me. But it is a book for the new generation, a shout out to everybody involved in music. We need to proceed on our mission, we need to continue with our work. We need to help the scene stay alive. “Cloud Arrangers” is the work of my lifetime.

It is also my first sole publication after “Jazzy-ga!”, a catalogue which accompanied my first international exhibition at the 1996 Saalfelden Jazz Festival in Austria, one of the most important festivals in Europe.

Now that 22 years have passed since I last published a book of music photography – the most recent eight of them spent on planning “Cloud Arrangers” – it is finally time to release my work into the open. On 376 pages, the book depicts almost all musical genres, from the mainstream all the way to free improvised music. Different genres of photography are also on display, from reportage-style catching-the-moment, both onstage and behind the scenes, to portraits of individuals or groups.

The legends Mats Gustafsson, Joëlle Léandre, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, and John Kelman have all contributed forewords.

It was hell to make a selection out of a huge archive. In the end I decided on those images I felt were the most vibrating, which recalled unforgettable memories, or those in which I had managed to transfer the deepest feelings of the event. I didn't want to include any picture in which the people depicted would not have liked themselves. The book presents the work closest to me, my best pictures, mostly shot in black-and-white with a few exceptions in color. Some of the earliest photos are right from the beginning of my path – like the 1986 Miles Davis concert in Belgrade. I started out working with analog cameras and have only recently switched to digital. But I still take the occasional portrait with an analog 6x7 medium-format camera.

All the feelings generated during the listening to the music I love, I transfer onto the photographs I am making. This is the magic I love so much, and which is presented in the book. I hope this will become apparent to you, too. My intentions with the book? To chronicle the happenings in the world of music during a stretch of time (namely, that of my lifetime), and to make sure these concerts will not be forgotten so easily. I hope this book will show the world how important musicians are, and how boundless their creativity.

I feel privileged for having had the chance of meeting so many wonderful people, of hearing so much good music, and of having seen a bit of the world. I am happy, and I certainly don't regret, that I have chosen the world of music as the main subject of my photography. Many have helped with my photography and with the making of this book. My immense thanks go to musicians and to concert promoters.

I am grateful and proud to report that Tom Waits and his management gave their kind permission to include a picture of him in the book.
A big Thank You to all of you who believe in my work, helping me with financial support or by spreading the word about the crowdfunding.

Most of the funds raised will be spent on actual ink and paper and the like. I also need to pay all the talented specialists involved in book production, from graphic designers to printers and binders and for production of rewards. The remainder will partly cover postage for sending copies of the book to all my backers.

Mats Gustafsson (excerpt from the text, featured in the book):

“Thanks to artists like Žiga we have a chance to remember those crucial moments that are valid to us. In our music. In our art. In our life. Because he captured them. He was there. And his sense of timing is so unbelievably musical. Pure music. That I can say. Music in black and white. Black and white music. I love the details. The compositions. The form. The density. The flow. The energy. It is all there. Inside of the images. And yes … I can also put it simple: Žiga is for sure the most amazing, sensitive and creative photographer alive when it comes to capturing the moment of MUSIC. In MUSIC. When it is done. Live. Alive. When it is being created. When the instant NOW appears. BANG! Wam bam BANG – CLICK! CLICK! “

Ken Vandermark (excerpt from the text, featured in the book):

"Ziga's black & white images are unique for a variety of reasons.  For one thing, he has the rare ability to take highly effective portraits which capture the different personalities of the musicians involved (for example, compare the photographs of Anthony Braxton, Han Bennink, Paul Lovens, and Joe McPhee; or how Ziga's timing reveals the different spirits of three drummers in his picture of Michael Zerang, Hamid Drake, and Tim Daisy- all happy to be together, all themselves).  Ziga also takes highly effective performance and candid shots (for example, contrast the images of Muhal Richard Abrams, Kaja Draksler, Elvin Jones, Toshinori Kondo, and Akira Sakata). Jan Granlie / Salt-peanuts.eu:

"When I first met Ziga, in Stavanger, Norway, at the Jazz Norway in a Nutshell, some years ago, I soon realized that I had got a new photograpic hero. And after that first meeting, I have been following him and his fantastic photos on the internet and on jazz festivals all around Europe, and even in Penang, Malaysia. I have watched him when he has been the festival photographer at a festival in Santa Teresa Di Galura, Sardinia, and when he has been crawling in front of a lot of different stages, trying to get the best photos. And every time his pictures are so beautiful. We have been on the same concerts, taking photos, but afterwards, when we look at the pictures, it looks like he has been to another, and much better concert than me! Because his pictures are pure magic!"

Book is designed by Marek Wajda, born July 5, 1956 in Kraków.

Marek Wajda @ my home finishing design; July 2018
Marek Wajda @ my home finishing design; July 2018

Polish freelance graphic designer based in Warsaw, graduated with honours from Henryk Tomaszewski’s Faculty of Graphic Arts’ master studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1984.

In his work he is striving to combine the outstanding achievements of the Polish School of Posters (which is his professor’s legacy) with the experiences from a long-term professional cooperation with various publishing houses, cultural institutions, advertising agencies and international companies, such as student weekly ITD (which was in the eighties very important illustrated Polish publication including a lot of works of famous Polish photographers), SAD/Apple IMC Poland (as a specialist of graphic design) and BBDO Advertising Agency (where he also held an Art Director managing position).

Along his career path he has been involved in both commercial and independent projects, mostly focused on designing logos, book and book cover layouts, but also the exhibitions using photographs as a medium. He shows a keen interest in photography applying it in his professional work and as a leisure activity. This has resulted in multiple exhibitions in art galleries across Poland.

Lately, due to his life-long passion for music he has been mostly focusing on designing posters for various musical events and festivals, and music CDs/LPs cover layouts. Cooperation with NotTwo Records, Polnisches Institut Wien / Polish Institute in Vienna / Austria, and Warsaw music venue Pardon, To Tu resulted in last 11 years in more than 80 CDs/LPs cover layouts and nearly 200 posters for jazz and improvised music events of musicians such as Ken Vandermark, Peter Brötzmann, Charles Gayle, Joe McPhee, Evan Parker, Alexander von Schlippenbach, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Mats Gustafsson, Dave Rempis, Peter Evans, Marc Ribot, Paal Nilssen-Love, Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten, Mikołaj Trzaska, Michael Gira, Thurston Moore, KONONO No 2, Ebo Taylor, and many, many others.

Risks and challenges

The risks and challenges when publishing a photo book include the possibility of delay, however my collaborators are very experienced at dealing with the production and printing challenges involved in making exceptional photography books. If this campaign is successful, I will do everything possible to make sure the book is published and shipped by the end of January 2019. Everybody involved is informed about my plans, waiting for the green light, to go on with the work.
