About this project
Desperation takes place in the year 2196 after the world has been stricken with war and natural disasters. Natural resources are slim and each group of nations are struggling to control the bulk of these resources, whether it be food, fuel, healthy laborers, or electricity. The United Nations have crumbled and each set of nations have grouped together by their continents. With only 6 remaining world powers, warfare has become a precision based set of surgical strikes to either eliminate opposing nation's resources, or secure resources for themselves.

Desperation:2196 is a Table top game in which each player takes on the role of a pilot of a giant robot known as M.O.C.U.s (Manually Operated Combat Unit). The player can fully customize their M.O.C.U. with an array of different primary and secondary weapons, head styles, leg styles, armor strengths, and miscellaneous additional equipment. Beyond that, the player also chooses their faction that they are fighting for which gives them a specific bonus or ability, and a skill for their pilot. With all of the options available it is possible to create over 1,000,000 different combinations for your M.O.C.U.
The game mechanics were designed to be simple and straight forward, but with enough variance that strategies can be formulated and each game will feel different. The game uses a fairly simple D10 system and movement is done in inches as opposed to templates. The basis of the game play is around two players taking the role of a single M.O.C.U. although Multiplayer variants have been written into the rules, and the rules support the use of multiple M.O.C.U.s being ran by a single player. My desire for multiplayer variants is that if there are multiple players in a single location (mainly your local game store) then instead of seeing 3 games that are all 1v1 happening, that you would see one game that is 3v3.
Let’s talk about the product that you will actually be purchasing now.
Two player starter box. This box will include:
- 1 Rule Book
- 2 Full M.O.C.U.s (Head, Torso, 2 Arms, and a set of Legs)
- 6 different weapon variants (a rifle, a laser rifle, a heavy vulcan cannon, a cluster missile, a primary cannon, and a rocket launcher)
- 2 Hexagon bases for the M.O.C.U. Stat cards for the 5 factions
- Stat cards for the M.O.C.U.s themselves (Legs, Armor, and head)
- Stat cards for the 6 weapons included
- Stat Cards for the pilot abilities
- 2 Tracking cards
- Counters needed for the tracking cards (Ammo Consumption and damage counters)
Below you will see all of the prototype designs! I want to make a few quick statements about this picture. The models shown are by Kotobukiya Manufacturing. These are not the models that are being provided in the starter set, they are simply shown to represent the size and scale of Desperation. The other point i wanted to make is that the cards and play mat are prototype versions and an artist (Amit of Crimzon Studios) is doing all custom work for the mat and card templates.

Here you can see the rough design of the M.O.C.U. provided in the starter set. I will be updating as i convert more parts from 3D mesh to 3D solid models, and I hope to have a physical prototype by the end of September.

I have received the updated finalized versions of the Statistic Cards, Play Mat, Token, and Card Backings. The artist is done with them, but I am not. The cards will obviously be updated with their necessary information. The card backs will be filled out with a symbol in the center signifying the card type (Legs, Operator Ability, Primary Weapon, etc.)

Below is a concept token that will be used to track your M.O.C.U.s damage. Originally I was using glass beads but I figured that a custom token would be more fun.
-Individual M.O.C.U.s can be purchased at $30.00 a piece. These come with the stat cards needed for them, a head, a torso, bipedal legs, and the base.
As more add-ons get revealed and released then the list above will get updated. If the reception of Desperation:2196 is incredibly positive then hopefully all of the add-ons in the core rule book will be available for purchase before this kickstarter is complete.
- There is a set of stretch goals that can also be achieved. I have an author and artist who are willing to create a graphic novel for the current universe, I also hope to create expansions that will add factions, space combat, foot infantry, and as always, more ways to build your own giant robot.

Where is my money going?
There are many expenses that come with producing a board game, especially one that includes plastic injection molding. This is just a brief breakdown of those expenses.
- Artwork (Box art, Rulebook Art, Card templates, tokens, Logos, etc.)
- Plastic Injection mold for the models
- Production Costs of the plastic models
- production cost of the "Paper Supplies" meaning the rule book, box, tokens, cards etc.
- Shipping Costs of the material from the manufacturer to me.
- Taxes and fees from Kickstarter.
I have the hope that everyone who pledges for this game will have confidence in my transparency. If anyone has a question about this then I will.
Risks and challenges
Well, according to this section, this is where I am suppose to be real with all of you, so here it goes.
The largest risk that I see with this is not getting the funding to actually produce the game. Obvious, right? I have spent many hours (I haven't been clocking myself) designing the models, play testing, writing the rules, attempting to balance, creating the cards, and coming up with the lore of the world. I feel as though this game is filling a hole in the table top market and I would love to see it being played. I designed this game with a M.O.B.A style in my head. Instead of each player building a small force, they are actually only building a single model. This is something I haven't seen before, and I think that it will help to draw the Gunpla (Gundam Plastic Model) hobbyists into the table top realm. So, that being said, the largest risk/challenge is lack of exposure for this game.
As far as challenges, I have broken the barrier of many different ideas. I have spent an incredible amount of time on the phone and emailing model producers, game card producers, well, pretty much everything that I would need in order to get this game from kick starter to doorstep so the challenge of logistics is far behind us. I have also gone through the challenges of learning 3D art programs, 2D art programs, and time management (as I am a married man with a full time job doing everything for this project by myself).
Once this project gets funded the challenges I foresee are product shipment and organization. Though I don't see these challenges being a large issue, they are definitely still things that can throw a wrench into the gears.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
