$3000: I will add more photos and increase the QUALITY of paper. The photos would be more vibrant and the book would be heavier, and we all know heavier photo books are just, like, better.
$4000: If I hit $4000, everyone who bought the physical book will receive an exclusive PISTOL SHRIMPS STETTEN shirt! My basketball team is very badass. Custom sizes, too!
MODELS ON PHONE STORY:
I’ve spent the last few years photographing my life as a model, 90% of which has been staring at my phone while waiting to hear my name called. I started the Instagram hashtag #ModelsOnPhones while in NYC waiting 3 hours for a L’Oreal casting. I remember looking up from my phone to see every model staring down at theirs. I continued to secretly (and creepily?) take pictures at every casting. I put my favorite photos into a book and added a caption underneath each one-- a huomorous interpretation of what I imagine the model is texting at that moment.
This book is a unique and very specific view of the modeling world in New York City, London, and Los Angeles. It's the not-so-glamorous look at a lifestyle considered highly glamorous. It’s a behind-the-scenes look into my life of being number 57 on the sign-in sheet.
I concealed the identities of the models with colored bars over their eyes. I chose the colors- blue, red, white, and yellow because it reminds me of French New Wave movies. Jean Luc Godard is a huge inspiration to me in terms of the mood and style in each of my photographs. The colored bars also give the book a sort of cool-underground feel. Also this makes sure that no girls in the book are prettier than me.
The book is 66 pages. I've printed prototypes through Blurb to make sure it looks exactly how I want it to. The cost of printing each book starts at $49 and goes down a small percentage as the order number increases. I'm hoping for at least 50 book orders, so I'm setting the goal at an amount that will make the book less expensive to print and ship. I'm not trying to make any money, I just really love this book and want to get it out in the world the least expensive way possible.
I also made postcards & stickers to send to everyone who donates!
I know people say "Blah blah blah I don't want to make money," and then raise a million dollars for their project, but I genuinely am not expecting any sort of profit. I have those sweet residual checks from that one time I was a "featured extra" on 30 Rock to pay my rent.
Risks and challenges
There are so many insecurities that come with creating anything. I had this book ready to go six months ago, but then felt very self-conscious about it. A sample of my thoughts:
"This is so dumb, who would want to buy this?"
"What if I don't reach my goal and look like a loser?"
"Am I even a good photographer?"
"Are my jokes too offensive?"
"What if I overlook a typo and it ruins my life?"
The only way to get rid of these thoughts is to just print the damn book. So that's what I'm doing.
I've used Blurb many times over the years and they always make quality products. I'm predicting the delivery date will be around 2-3 weeks after my Kickstarter ends. If everything goes smoothly (it won't) you'll have your book by the second week of June. Just in time for summer! Because books and summer go together, right?
You can put 100% faith in me that I will do everything to get this book to you as fast as humanly possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
