In August of 2013, a group of students set about to create their own, original work for the state high school theatre competition. They started with a simple story: a young girl must cope with the sudden illness of a loved one. They set about incorporating puppetry, shadow puppetry, animation, and live music into the story- teaching themselves these elements along the way, and learning the frustration and exhilaration of creating their own piece of art. They took this new creation- a student-written, student-scored, student- designed and produced work to the state finals- and brought home a Best in Show trophy.

The response was amazing: people were truly moved by the story and mesmerized by the storytelling. Now, they have the opportunity to take this beautiful story to the nascent Atlanta Fringe Festival. This particular play is a good fit for the Fringe format- an experimental multimedia performance with a heart- and they are excited to have the opportunity to transcend "high school theatre" and present their play as a dedicated group of young artists. Funds raised will be used to help these students present their play to the wider audience of the Fringe; please help this new generation of artists as they make their debut to a wider world!

I am, of course, biased- these are my students- but I truly believe that this play deserves to be seen, deserves an audience. Please help us as we help these kids realize their own roles and powers as young artists, and help introduce audiences to the magic that is Amelia the Brave!

Risks and challenges

The challenges with "Amelia" may not be as complex as other projects on Kickstarter; we already have our product- we're just trying to get an audience to see it! Perhaps our biggest challenge will be getting people to believe in the project as much as we do!

We, of course, have the potential for actors to back out, but we've addressed this by having each member of the team become familiar with the various roles and technical aspects; anyone can quickly step in to fill any voids. Technical malfunctions are a possibility- this play does rely upon video projection. That said, we have come up with a work around using shadow puppetry; it wouldn't be the show we'd hope for, but the audience might never know the difference.

Again, our major obstacle is getting people to believe in and support the ability of a group of young artists to create a moving, heartfelt story. take a chance on these kids- you will be supporting the artists of the future.
