Title: Lost In The Vaults -
Rare collectables and forgotten gems from the Jazzwise archives
Author: Daniel Spicer
Publisher: Eleusinian Press
What's it all about?
First a little history, Daniel tells it like this, "At the end of 2005, Jon Newey, then Editor of Jazzwise, put out a call for proposed contributions to a new column he was launching in the magazine. Called “Lost In The Vaults,” the column was to feature, each month, a different jazz recording that was out of print and languishing in the doldrums of unavailability. Around a year into my burgeoning career as a music writer, and keen to write as much as possible, I immediately suggested something from Sun Ra’s legendarily extensive and abstruse back catalogue. Jon went for it. I got the gig, with my first attempt being published in February 2006. From then on, for almost 13 years, I contributed a column each month – apart from a few occasions when there wasn’t room to run one, and two months fairly early on when fellow scribe Brian Priestley did the honours. It was a pretty simple brief: all I had to provide was 150 words on a recording of my choice, details of how much it was selling for and a thumbnail of the cover art. Piece of cake."
Sometime later in 2018, Daniel thought 'wouldn't it be great if all these columns I wrote could be collated into one place, one book'. Eleusinian Press then came along and suggested that given they like his work, they would happily put the book out.
The basic format is described above. And Eleusinian Press is going ot put the book together in a form that is both a treat for the 'coffee table' and an easily accessible guide for collectors. Some things have been updated such as the most recent pricing that would have changed since the first columns in 2006. And where possible any CD reissues have been researched and noted.
In the long run this will be a paperback coffee table book that will be available on Amazon and retailers from mid-2019 on. However backers of this project can get a hardback version that will only ever be available through this kickstarter. No others will be publsihed after this. So they will be a limited edition item limited only by the number of kickstarter backers opting for a copy. Hardbacks are costly though, so we are also offering the forthcoming papaerback on here as an early bird edition, and kickstarter backers choosing this option will be guaranteed a copy before it hits the shops.
The kickstarter itself is to cover costs of editing, typesetting, proofreading and printing.
Thank you for your contribution.
