Bear medicine invokes an animal completely in touch with the earth and life, it is a powerful guide and support in physical and emotional healing. We find these to be true of the work we want to accomplish in our lifetime.

Bear Medicine Publishing (bearmedicinepublishing.org) was established in July 2015 by Alessandra Jann-Jordan and Ignacio Fleishour with a mission to foster social consciousness in children and their parents, and promote cultural heritage preservation through the perpetuation of Native, ancient, endangered foreign languages and oral traditions.

Bear Medicine Publishing wishes to intervene in the accelerated rate of cultural diffusion today and the implications on the language survival of smaller ethnic groups; we believe that with the death of native language comes the extinction of smaller cultural realities. Bear Medicine Publishing preserves and tells the cultural stories of our ancestors and passes them on to future generations.

A Colorful Journey is a 26 page children's book with 12 vibrant, full page images. It's an ancient Native American story passed down to Ignacio from his Kiowa Apache grandfather and is adapted for Hawaii, the State we live in. Hence, the Hawaiian voyaging canoes! Funding this project through kickstarter will allow us to publish our book and also distribute 100 copies to under-served children in Hawaii - free of charge.

The story, geared for children ages 4 and above, tells of morals and values, promotes environmental awareness and conservation and helps children identify with and understand emotions. It imparts a way to see the world and the many colors, representations and things we can learn from our environment and people. It's based on colors, here translated into Hawaiian, and what they can teach all of humanity. Eventually, it will be translated to Apache and include altered art and wording for relevance to that specific community.

"There will also be days that are filled with clouds that will be grey and rainy. Even if the clouds seem dark and scary we should remember that the clouds and the earth gives us water as a gift from the sky so that all life on earth can survive."
"There will also be days that are filled with clouds that will be grey and rainy. Even if the clouds seem dark and scary we should remember that the clouds and the earth gives us water as a gift from the sky so that all life on earth can survive."

Our stories teach social, coping and problem solving skills, address goals and achievements and promote a healthy lifestyle and mental well-being.

"Like people on this earth there are many shades of people with different colors, backgrounds and beliefs from all over the world. Though they are all different colors they are all part of the rainbow that is life and make up the beauty of this earth."

"Family camping trips are among my favorite childhood memories. As we sat around the fire in the cool of the evening, my grandfather told us the stories of our ancestors gathering around the fire."

"He spoke of the light in the fire we each hold within and how we, as human beings, are all connected through this light... Grandfather taught us this light could be made brighter through an awareness of our bodies."

"Let the light flow and grow as beaming rays to and through your stomach, expanding as you breathe deep into the center of your being... Let the light remind us that we need to be and eat healthy to help us keep the light bright..."

A'o Loko: Written and illustrated by Ignacio. A traditional Apache story adapted for Hawaii encouraging critical thinking and awareness of social issues and the value of preserving culture. The story is about three brothers trying to save other children from being lost out to sea. In the process the brothers discover the difference between doing for others, teaching others and finding the root cause of challenges.

All books published by Bear Medicine Publishing will be translated into French, Spanish, Italian, Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Small batches will be made available in Tagalog, Samoan, Chuuk, Apache and local communities where the stories originate.

Bear Medicine Publishing Goals:

 • Publish stories that have been passed down to us.

 • Accept submissions for stories that represent oral traditions and help bring artists and writers together to tell the stories of the world.

• Publish electronically via e books.

• Build interactive Web platforms and mobile/tablet applications for the books.

 • Donate books and time to schools and educational programs.

• Work with Social Workers, psychologists, Counselors and State Agencies to promote well-being for both staff and clients.

• Create Therapeutic tools and programs that incorporate cultural practices.

Risks and challenges

As entrepreneurs and business owners, we understand the risks and challenges of taking an idea from beginning to end. For over 25 years, Ignacio has successfully managed companies with staff of over 250 and built and sold multiple businesses, including a surf magazine that was immediately bought out in Hawaii. He currently owns and operates a Hawaiian catering business (ponoainacatering.com). Alessandra manages an independent jewelry making business (alessandrasdesigns.com) and is Director of a non-profit, the Captain's Club (captainsclubhi.org), which offers free sailing lessons to children in foster care, in addition to her full time employment as a social worker for the state.

The biggest challenge we see right now is making sure the printing process results in the quality completion of paper back copies of the book by the time we expect to ship to our backers. Having already printed one off, we know that the technical aspects of the book are sound and ready for printing. Other challenges regarding shipping are sometimes unavoidable (delays, lost mail) but our plan is to provide constant communication and keep everyone updated on the process and progress and when they will receive their rewards.
