About this project
Bear Medicine Publishing (bearmedicinepublishing.org) was established in July 2015 by Alessandra Jann-Jordan and Ignacio Fleishour with a mission to foster social consciousness in children and their parents, and promote cultural heritage preservation through the perpetuation of Native, ancient, endangered foreign languages and oral traditions.
Bear Medicine Publishing wishes to intervene in the accelerated rate of cultural diffusion today and the implications on the language survival of smaller ethnic groups; we believe that with the death of native language comes the extinction of smaller cultural realities. Bear Medicine Publishing preserves and tells the cultural stories of our ancestors and passes them on to future generations.
A Colorful Journey is a 26 page children's book with 12 vibrant, full page images. It's an ancient Native American story passed down to Ignacio from his Kiowa Apache grandfather and is adapted for Hawaii, the State we live in. Hence, the Hawaiian voyaging canoes! Funding this project through kickstarter will allow us to publish our book and also distribute 100 copies to under-served children in Hawaii - free of charge.
The story, geared for children ages 4 and above, tells of morals and values, promotes environmental awareness and conservation and helps children identify with and understand emotions. It imparts a way to see the world and the many colors, representations and things we can learn from our environment and people. It's based on colors, here translated into Hawaiian, and what they can teach all of humanity. Eventually, it will be translated to Apache and include altered art and wording for relevance to that specific community.
Our stories teach social, coping and problem solving skills, address goals and achievements and promote a healthy lifestyle and mental well-being.

Risks and challenges
As entrepreneurs and business owners, we understand the risks and challenges of taking an idea from beginning to end. For over 25 years, Ignacio has successfully managed companies with staff of over 250 and built and sold multiple businesses, including a surf magazine that was immediately bought out in Hawaii. He currently owns and operates a Hawaiian catering business (ponoainacatering.com). Alessandra manages an independent jewelry making business (alessandrasdesigns.com) and is Director of a non-profit, the Captain's Club (captainsclubhi.org), which offers free sailing lessons to children in foster care, in addition to her full time employment as a social worker for the state.
The biggest challenge we see right now is making sure the printing process results in the quality completion of paper back copies of the book by the time we expect to ship to our backers. Having already printed one off, we know that the technical aspects of the book are sound and ready for printing. Other challenges regarding shipping are sometimes unavoidable (delays, lost mail) but our plan is to provide constant communication and keep everyone updated on the process and progress and when they will receive their rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
