About this project

Jane Eyre, a full-length opera by composer Louis Karchin and librettist Diane Osen was premiered at the Kaye Playhouse, on Oct. 20 and 22, 2016 under the auspices of the Center for Contemporary Opera. The League of Composers/ISCM is raising funds to record this opera in September, 2017, for release on Naxos Records with the original cast. Reprising their roles will be soprano Jennifer Zetlan (Metropolitan Opera), and Ryan MacPherson (NYC Opera), with Thomas Meglioranza, Katrina Thurman, and Kimberly Giordano also among the 9 solo singers, chorus and a 35–piece orchestra. The Orchestra of the League of Composers will provide the orchestral accompaniment.

Donors contributing $100 or more will receive a free copy of the 2-CD set, signed by the composer, and those contributing $250 or more will, in addition, receive mention in the accompanying Naxos liner notes. The League-ISCM is the oldest organization in America devoted to contemporary music, and a registered non-profit organization. All donations are fully tax-deductible.

Here are some press excerpts from the premiere performances of Jane Eyre

“Karchin’s musical language is wildly inventive, and his orchestrations vivid and deft…evocative orchestral passages that captured the novel’s repressed romantic passion. The singers rose to the opera’s challenges with blazing talent and commitment. Jennifer Zetlan’s performance in the title role was nothing short of heroic. Her Jane was plucky, innocent, and appealingly self-aware, quietly observant but palpating with deep emotion. Tenor Ryan MacPherson made a handsome, elegant Rochester, singing with brilliant, bright tone. Baritone Thomas Meglioranza was perfectly pitched as Jane’s pious cousin St. John Rivers, while Jessica Thompson and Jessica Best fluttered appealingly as his affectionate sisters. Soprano Kimberly Giordano added warmth to the staunch housekeeper, Mrs. Fairfax.” Joanne Sydney Lessner, Opera News

“The composer, and the librettist, and the stage director—and the novelist, Charlotte Brontë—had me the whole way. The end was moving, as Jane returns to Rochester, in his wrecked physical state. I thought, ‘This opera, in its warmth, beauty, and goodness, is brave.’” Jay Nordlinger, The New Criterion (Arts and Literary Magazine)

”Crucial arias and scenes build to glittering radiance….big arias that end with flourishes and invite applause…. The cast members gave their all, especially Ryan MacPherson as Rochester and Thomas Meglioranza as St. John Rivers, a minister who appears later in the story. Sara Jobin conducted a colorful, bristling account of the score.” Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times

Risks and challenges

Our Kickstarter campaign represents only a portion of the costs of recording Jane Eyre. The project will involve a week of rehearsals and three full days devoted to the recording sessions themselves. Expenses will include performers‘ fees, hall rental, recording engineer, the renting of percussion equipment, and the editing and mastering of the final product.

Although the two live performances of Jane Eyre attracted robust audiences, donations will help us bring this opera to life for a worldwide audience through Naxos’ far-reaching distribution network.
