Background

The Little Free Library project is a community initiative that helps encourage reading at all levels, and by all age groups. The concept is simple: Install a library box in an easily accessible area in our community where children and adults can exchange books free of charge! The box is kept unlocked at all times, so in effect the library is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week and works on the “take a book, leave a book” principle.  No due dates, no late fees, no library cards!  This is an initiative that has been embraced overwhelmingly in communities around the world.

My wife and I will build the library that we will have shipped to us from the Little Free Library program website. The program is run not for profit and prides itself on having helped organize Little Free Library boxes in dozens of countries in the developed and non-developed world.

With the successful installation of Ottawa’s first registered Little Free Library, our goal is to instill the importance of reading, sharing, and sense of community in our children.

Mission

To raise the funds necessary to secure, install, and stock a Little Free Library in our community in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Funding will cover buying the Library and the installation (a stand or pole). Additional costs for a Review Log and other used books will be covered by ourselves. Should any additional money be leftover we will put it back into the project in the form of additional books, and possibly another Library elsewhere in the community.

Because this is new to the city of Ottawa, the aim is to install the first Little Free Library in our own neighbourhood of Fisher Glen.  We welcome and encourage future sites across our city!

To get a better sense of how the Little Free Library works, here is Adison Schanie, who set one up in her neighbourhood, to explain (video from Little Free Library website):

Risks and challenges

Of course, there is always the risk of vandalism or individuals abusing the system. The Little Free Library website reports that while still possible, instances of vandalism are in fact quite rare. As for the books being improperly borrowed, taken, or damaged, this too is the risk one takes when setting up something that is free, fully accessible, and in the community’s trust. Besides that fact that we believe our community to be a responsible one, we are also making ourselves available to manage the library that will be located within feet of our property. We fully believe that the benefits far outweigh the risks.
