the Coco Code is an illustrated book, inspired by Coco, the Boston Terrier, and her ability to communicate a level of curiosity, playfulness, appreciation and love without a word. The book is a standing invitation to join Coco in finding the bliss that surrounds each of us, to start a conversation, and to listen to others, especially those who communicate differently from us.
Simply put, our goal is to share some of what makes Coco special, and to get her into as many hearts, hands and homes across the globe.
Each hand drawn illustration is directly inspired by shared experiences between Coco and myself, the author and illustrator. Coco communicated so much, in her own way, the only thing I had to do was to slow down and listen. She would pull me into the present and call my attention to simple pleasures, the kind that surround us all daily. The Coco Code is the best way I know to honor some of what she taught.
The book uses a limited color scheme, as an invitation to the reader to mentally color in the environment. By filling in the gaps, you add to the story and make it your own, in a way no one else can.
7"x 7" hard bound book, 52 pages
"Jump for bubbles" - Not much explaining required here, but our girl loved bubbles! Apparently these transparent, rainbow orbs are full of cheer, and ripe for the picking, it is highly recommended that you grab some.
"Adventure is everywhere..." - Rarely did Coco stay on a path, she was part mountain goat I think, she would scramble up rock faces and preferred walking on the slopes that trails were cut from. At home, she would bury herself in the jungle of palms and desert plants of our yard, sweeping the premises for jaguars or more often squirrels.
"Splash in water" - Coco would seek out any body of water, none too big nor to small, and bathe in the joy of splashing, be that in a puddle, a dog bowl, a pool or the ocean.
"Dance when you're happy..." - It never mattered if I was coming inside our home from throwing out the garbage, or back from a week's vacation, Coco would curl up like a cashew and shuffle around in tight circles and/or hop around on her hind legs like a tiger in the circus. Her "happy dance" as we called it, was infectious and before you knew it, you were full of glee.
"Your size doesn't limit your character" - Coco was small, but boy, was she mighty! She ran with the big dogs, cuddled so hard, she would push you off of a king sized bed, she played tough, had an enormous catalog of sounds she would make, some voluntary, some not. ;) How did so much personality come in such a small package? I don't know, but it goes to show, you can be as big, bright and bold as you want, there is nothing and no one to stop you.
"Love unconditionally" - I think this is about the best foot to leave things on. If you have felt, shared and/or given unconditional love, you are as lucky as they get. Coco was a black-belt, master, light-force ninja of unconditional love, and we can all strive to mirror the love others show us.
The Kickstarter community has proven itself to be a wonderful resource for independently produced projects. We have previously developed and delivered two successful vinyl products, HEX6AGON & FACET, which were designed to encourage the recipients to interact with their living space and apply their own creative imprint.
Similarly, our intention with the Coco Code is to welcome every reader and those who just know what Coco is doing from the pictures to participate in the moments that often go unnoticed. Life can be a fast read, until you plug in to your surroundings, slowing down to enjoy the people, places, things, feelings, environments, etc. The Kickstarter platform nurtures a safe space for those that see things a little differently, that is why we wanted to debut this very personal passion project, right here, right now.
We are excited to bring this sweetly illustrated picture book to life with the help of you and the Kickstarter community. Here is how we will allocate funds generated through this campaign:
We want to print a minimum of 500 books, so any book surplus remaining, after shipping our rewards, will be mailed to publishers and small businesses that we think may be able to get Coco into more hands, homes and hearts across the globe.
- 30 day campaign
- 4 weeks proof & printing
- 6 weeks import via ocean liner
- 2 weeks packaging and shipping
This adds up to approximately 4 months in total production time to delivery. If we are able to exceed our financial goal early, we would like to pursue expedited shipping from our printer, shaving off up to 4 weeks!
Risks and challenges
Creating a quality product of this process is extremely important to us, and translating the color of each print to be as true to the original art work is our focus. However, potential risks do exist in both print quality and timing.
Our team will make sure that all of our "t's" are crossed and "i's" are dotted, figuratively and literally, to ensure that our finished product is aligned properly. Small alterations to the book have already been flagged as part of a printed proof copy already obtained. The manufacturer that we have selected to work with has a successful record across a variety of Kickstarter campaigns, and knows the industry well. We plan to be in regular communication with them throughout the process.
