Vinyl Shadows: Facet Collection; featuring Fools Gold
The Finished Product: Facet Collection is the newest material exploration by Process + Content, bringing vinyl to the floor, in a interactive + customizable tiling system, featuring bold, geometric designs. Fools Gold, is the first color combination of the Facet Collection, the 3 diamond shaped tiles come in matte white, matte black + mirrored gold. The diamonds are precision cut to meet seamlessly with the sides of each of the 3 shapes. The application of the thin tiles to the floor is meant to delineate space, riffing off of inlayed wood + tile, of classically designed + constructed buildings. They add color + pattern, in a clean + graphic way, with modern design + an undertone of whimsy.
Proudly, FACET is made + all materials sourced in California.
3 diamond tiles cover an 8"x9" area, 3mm thick. $10 buys 3 tiles inside of the orange box, $15 buys all 9 tiles pictured above.
Why Kickstarter: As a designer, exploring mediums + applications is an investment of hours. Arriving at a final process + resolved product is financially costly. Up to this point, I have cut my product by hand, which is labor intensive + leaves room for error. Kickstarter would finance three dies to be made, improving accuracy, shortening production time + ultimatley lowering costs.
Where to Use:Facet was conceived to be applied to interior floors, but can be used on most cleaned interior surfaces, walls, tables, etc. Facet will stick to cement, wood, tile, laminate, painted surfaces etc, + can be removed without damaging residue for up to 2 years.
Depending on the number of tiles you have, you can use Facet in different scaled spaces, entrance halls, around + under coffee/dining tables, under dog bowls, basically anywhere you want to visually define, perhaps indicating where specific activities take place.
It took 20 minutes to lay the 37 tiles pictured.
How to Use: Pick or design your own pattern. A printed reference sheet will be included in shipments for pledges $10 and over, if designing your own pattern I suggest having a small printed or illustrated reference so you don't confuse yourself. Start with a cleaned surface, follow recommended products for your specific surface (avoiding oils). Consider your layout, do you want it square to the room, or on an angle, centered, or floating. Measure out (even mask out the edges) of your projected dimensions. To choose + lay your first tile, think about the logistics, I would suggest starting in a corner for linear patterns, or from the center, for radiating patterns.
The 3mm vinyl has enough of a lip for you to perfectly butt-up each piece to piece. Apply your first piece, smooth out, with your hand + continue on to your second piece. When butting up pieces, start by matching starting points for corners + slowly lay neighboring pieces straight, using the edge of the already laid tile, as a guide. If you have an air bubble, first try to smooth out with the edge of a credit card, if that doesn't do the trick, pull up part or the entire tile and replace. The tiles are resilient, but be mindful as to not rip away, or stretch the tile when removing. The tile will reattach to the floor. Avoid applying + reapplying the exact same tile too many times.
Play with negative space, your floor becomes the fourth color + texture in the patterns.
Expected Lifespan: When applied, natural wear will occur, leaving your unique imprint on the product + space. Traffic volume + exposure to the elements (specifically water) will dictate much of the lifespan. A clean surface will give Facet the best start. You can expect Facet to "stick around" for several months to 2 of years without leaving a residue.
Shipping: We aim to ship FACET in July.
