When thirty giant glowing jellyfish show up in a public park or plaza where people are gathered, it creates a sense that something is happening, which is exactly the point. Everything is happening all the time, all around us, and each and every one of us plays a role in creating a world that reflects our deepest values and truest nature. We are all still faced with determining what kind of world we want to live in, and public art engages everyone in this dialogue.
JFWP is an interactive public art project that spreads peace and joy through creativity and participation. A bloom of 30 illuminated Jellyfish puppets will travel around the world to landmark sites and cityscapes from Tahir Square to the London Bridge, engaging the public in the direct creation of a moving public art installation. The surreal, ethereal presence of the Jellyfish stimulates the imagination and evokes a positive emotional response, bringing people across socio-political boundaries together through art.
A core team of three people with backgrounds in Chinese medicine, behavioral therapy, filmmaking, performance art and design will travel around the world with 30 giant Jellyfish puppets packed into snowboard cases. The jellyfish are 6’ tall and attached to an 8’ pole. Their body is sewn out of pure white fabric and attached to an umbrella frame. They weigh 10 pounds. A powerful 6 color LED light panel illuminates them so they can be viewed from miles away. Currently, we are working to engineer to an interactive lighting component so that the Jellyfish respond to one another with changing colors. When the sun goes down, we set them up, and engage people in taking them out for a walk for the world to see. We will travel to major cities and landmark sites in Northern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. We will document everything.
WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW
We have fabricated 5 prototypes that represent the final design minus the interactive lighting component. We have taken them to public events, and to the streets of Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, and California, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Most significantly, we have witnessed how this art resonates with people of any age, race, class, and religion, and brings them together through the collective creation of public art that is inclusive, unexpected, and inspiring. We are excited to take this project to places where public art like this is infrequent if not non-existent, and document the results.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge in this project is conveying how profound something so simple can be, and demonstrating the value of investing in public art. When we take the Jellies out, it is very common for people to ask us why we are doing what we are doing. Are we jellyfish conservationists? Are we doing a school project? Are we selling something? Our response is that we are doing this because it is fun, and it makes people smile. People always agree that we are successful, and then comes the magical realization that they too are a part of creating this joyful moment. We believe that people really take something away from this interaction with the jellyfish. Participatory public art is about putting the tools in everyones hands to be a part of the show, the landscape, the community, at all times. Our goal is to facilitate a sense of ownership in the bigger picture of our shared experience, all around the world.
