About

Founded in 1927, Yamamoto Noh Theater is the oldest existing Noh theatre in Osaka, designated as a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Japan. We perceive Noh as a classical and yet living performing art - a vessel of universal ethical and aesthetic values from which both actors and audience can learn, irrelevant of their age or cultural identity. We strive to present Noh to the international audience as a Japanese classical art that belongs to the world. We aim to harness Noh's potential to be a bonding material between cultures and generations, by creating and performing a new Noh play, based on a myth that is shared among all Balkan and European countries.

We plan the first performance of the new Noh play "Orpheus" to be on the stage of the ancient Roman Amphitheatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. By comparing the Japanese and European antiquity we aim to draw ethical parallels, thus facilitating a deeper understanding of both cultures. "Orpheus" will depict one of the key figures in Balkan and European cultures through the lens of Japanese tradition, and will focus on the connection between the human soul, love and nature, as well as the conflict between the ambition of personal achievement, one’s true feelings and cultural identity.

The creation and premiere of the new play "Orpheus" will involve Bulgarian and Japanese actors, directors and children from local schools. A key priority of our project is expanding the local actors’ abilities with techniques from Noh, as well as the creation of a favourable networking environment for professionals from different nationalities and fields of interest.

Another priority of our project is the difficult task to present Noh to the widest possible range of spectators, regardless of their knowledge of Japanese culture, while maintaining the canon of the ancient performing tradition. We aim not only to entertain, but also to educate the international audience and inspire interest in the classical culture of Japan. Furthermore, the creation and performance of the new Noh play "Orpheus" seeks to create a gateway to the culture of Japan, that will remain open long after the realisation of the project. This is the first step in Yamamoto Noh Theater's plan to train local actors and perform the newly created play in a number of European countries sharing a common ancient culture, thus transforming the Japanese tradition into a bonding element for intercultural understanding.

Risks and challenges

We have received backing by the foundations "EU Japan Fest", "Plovdiv 2019" and "The Japan Foundation". However, the current funding covers only a small portion of the costs. We are determined to carry out our project in one way or another. Budget cuts are our last resort, so we desperately need your support to be able to develop the full potential of our project.
