We're Anthology Coffee. Our mission is to source, roast and serve the best coffee we can with uncompromising quality. Our process encompasses more than craft and passion. We never stop challenging ourselves to produce coffee that is distinct, while constantly seeking improvement in all that we do. We approach coffee modestly as students rather than as masters. That’s not to say we don’t know what we are doing, often applying knowledge to information and then experimenting. Using strict standards we source the best small-lot seasonal coffees we can find; we’re not afraid to buy coffees that question norms. Each coffee is uniquely developed to show intrinsic characteristics of the fruit during roast. Mistakes are made along the way, but we learn from them and in the end we always find pleasure in the cup. We then test each batch for quality using both traditional skills and contemporary tools.Through these methods we’ve created something unique. We don’t think of Anthology as being “craft coffee”, or specialty coffee, or third wave . . . we really don’t like boxes or definitions and would prefer that people experience our coffees and our cafe space for themselves, and realize that all the different aspects that go into making our coffee what it is are designed to keep us forward-moving, relevant, and above all always representing each coffee in the way that best uniquely fits it.
Our goal is to consistently roast good coffee and make it the most satisfying it can be. We try to understand that there isn’t a one size fits all method to roasting, so we treat individual coffees differently to showcase their unique qualities. This gives us the freedom and the room to try new methods, learn from mistakes and continually grow.
We started in May of 2011 with $3000 and quite literal blood sweat and tears. In our first year we focused on pop ups and developing wholesale partnerships. In August of 2012 we moved in to our current home at Pony Ride. Over several years we built tested and rebuilt our cafe to dial in our service model and test drink ideas, food options, sourcing relationships and of course built some very meaningful relationships with many of you. Pony Ride sort of became a long term pop up of sorts.
When we first launched we had no partners in Detroit and we're proud to have helped build a specialty coffee community in Detroit along with our OG friends over at Astro Coffee. Today a majority of our wholesale partnerships are here in the city. Through this growth we have reached capacity for production at Pony Ride, that along with their plans to move has inspired us to spread our wings and venture out of the startup community at Pony Ride.
We are a small team focused on equity for our partners both at origin and at home and for our team. Our founders and partners have over 2 decades specialty coffee experience but where we find the most value is often in our most inexperienced team members.
We find great freedom in our independence. Our goal is to grow equitably. To us this is wholistic and not just focused on one aspect of Anthology. Whether we're investing in our Detroit community through our "Coffee for Community" program, creating profit sharing for our team or sourcing the best coffees at living wages for farmers, our independence is what allows us to do this.
We've begun our buildout and have already invested a lot in our new home. Our deposits are in for our plumbing and electrical and both have begun, we still need finishing work, lighting fixtures, and our waters heaters. Our Bar is built and needs finishing work. Cabinetry needs finished and installed. Our kitchen needs drywalled painted and FRP where needed. We still need more basic equipment and extra funding will be used towards more equipment like a tap system.
The greatest reward of all is of course, you get a new favorite hang out spot. We've also partnered with our friends near and wide to offer some pretty cool, exclusives, only available through this kickstarter. The collaboration with Batch Brewing Company is 1 750ml bottle.
We hope to deliver our rewards along side the launch of our new space. Some rewards such as subscriptions are available for immediate release following full funding. We will update you regarding timelines for each reward as updates become available.

Risks and challenges
We have already signed the lease and began buildout. Unfortunately we have little control over how quick our buildout goes. Our landlord and contractors have influence over this timeline. This has been our biggest challenge to date. However having already been through the process once before, we have full confidence in our ability to deliver a beautiful space for your enjoyment.
We have put in the time to find finding ethical, quality and reliable partners, and waited until that was done before committing to launch via this Kickstarter campaign.
