We've spent sixteen months working on the basic version of the app. We've already laid out the plans for the next generation which will be more efficient and include more features. We need a little help creating our new and improved app. With the community and nerdy events, it’s the app you won’t want to live without in 2017.
When you sign up for Nerd Out, you join a worldwide community of nerds! Now you’ll never miss an event again! #NerdOut
"My friend is transgender & recently moved to Las Vegas for a new job. Her work environment is not a welcoming environment & so she has not yet come out to her coworkers, making her feel even more isolated in a new town. I recommended she check out Nerd Out app for Magic meet ups or gatherings for her to reconnect with fellow players in Vegas. She now has a slice of her Magic community from which to find a bit of home in a new town. Thank you for helping create the environment for finding our nerd/geek communities in new places." - Izzy
"It’s so hard to find niche events in general events listings. I love being able to find more tabletop games and fan meet-ups in my own town instead of waiting for the next convention." - shame_y
"Michelle’s idea is serving all kinds of geeky needs for people around the world." - Amy Poehler's Smart Girls
"My favorite thing about the app was the variety of events it included. There are all types of things listed in the app.." - Daily Dot
"...it highlights everything from musical theatre and film events, to large conventions, to things as niche as a Doctor Who Magazine 500th edition celebration. Prepare to have your interests catered to." - Gadgette
"...thanks to a community of editors, it is easily one of the best guides to local events for anyone looking to familiarize themselves." - Oh Catrina
The basic (current) version of the app is built on a template.
We need your help to build our full-featured mobile app.
The template cannot be modified, nor can we add any more cities until the new app is built. We do not own the template so we have to rebuild from scratch.
The funds raised from this campaign will go directly into development. With a small amount going towards the perks. These areas of our application require further work:
A) Improved Geolocation
The next generation the app will be able to pinpoint your location off the bat along with the ability to look up other locations.
B) More Locations
Once launched we'll focus on filling out the United States, and the United Kingdom. Followed by Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. From there we plan to open to other countries. Offering the app in a country's primary language is important to us. Until we are able to offer the app in languages other than English, we'll be holding off. However, know that it is our ultimate goal to be global, so fear not!
Search events by price, age, and content (cosplay, gaming, conventions, comics, etc).
D) Making Friends
Finding and adding friends in the next generation will be faster and more user-friendly.
Want to talk to your friends? You will now be able to! We'll also have stickers available for you to send to your friends! They will all be nerd inspired! Will act like the Facebook Messanger stickers. They will come in themed packs.
F) Social Wall
We will be improving it with the ability to use hashtags and tag other users!
- The next generation app will also be much smaller in (download) size than the basic app.
Your contributions small or large will help us launch the next generation of Nerd Out! For every donation, however small, we will mention your generosity on our website!
Love Pandora? Love how it suggests songs you'll like? Nerd Out suggests events based on your interests! Suggesting based on your profile by collecting your interests! Must pledge at least $5 to get access to this feature. (feature will be available to the public July 2017 for a fee)
Once the app is launched filters will be priced for $2.99. It is a one time fee. As mentioned previously filters will allow you to search events by price, age, and content (gaming, conventions, comics, etc). By pledging, you'll bypass this fee.
Will act like the Facebook Messanger stickers. They will come in themed packs. Once the app is launched Stickers will run about $0.99 per pack. Animated stickers may run for $1.99 per pack. By pledging, you'll bypass this fee for 5 packs. Pack sizes will vary between 8-12 stickers.

As a nerd herself, Michelle is very passionate about this project. She had never worked in tech before. However, she did research, found mentors (like WeAreLATech), and pursued ahead. It has now been 15 months since the launch of the app and the response has been amazing.
As the basic app is built on a template, there are some limitations with it that slow down productivity. Such as there is no way to automatically make an event recurring, we have to manual input events that happen every Tuesday for instance (that's 52 times a year for a single recurring event, of which we have many). We cannot modify it or add any additional cities.
Currently, we have to manually enter in (copy & paste) events which is time-consuming and tedious. With the next generation, we'll be able to add events much more efficiently which means even more fun for you!
Michelle has been bootstrapping to bring you this amazing product. However, to improve it and bring it to even more people she needs your help.
This passion project has grown so much that we now need help from the nerd community to move forward. By supporting this project you'll be receiving an event calendar, social media platform, and a place to call your nerdy home!
The money raised will be used to hire Zach Van Ness of Breue as our developer. As a nerd himself, he's a perfect fit for our app! Zach has created a number of apps, some of his creations have been acquired by companies such as Twitter. App build will take about 7-9 weeks. A small portion will be used to purchase the t-shirts, phone cases, and stickers.
Founder (aka Nerd Out Girl Boss): Michelle L. Jensen was raised on Long Island, NY. Moved to Los Angeles to study Film/TV. She's a nerdy travel blogger, fangirl, and cosplayer. She is excited to bring others together through the nerddom!
Event Manager (aka Nerd Out Head Cheerleader): Monica is a Southern California native. Born and raised under the California sun. Her main passions in life are her family and her geekdom. She is excited to share her love of all things “Doctor Who” with the world!
As well as nearly 50 Nerd Squad members! (Our version of a Street Team)
Back in April 2015, Michelle was invited to a number of events because of her nerdy blog. She talked to a friend about how hard it was keeping track of all these events because the information was scattered (Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr). She then thought how awesome it would be to not only have a way to keep track of events, but to discover new ones!
Everyone knows about San Diego Comic Con, but not so much about local events. And what do you do for the rest of the year?
Some of us have anxiety about large events, so events like SDCC are not conducive. Also, can be more difficult to connect with people when you’re running from panel to panel. It’s nice that Nerd Out gives you the option to go to a smaller or a larger event.
Finally, Michelle was the new kid twice in her life. Moving to another state can make life difficult. Michelle aims to help nerds in these situations by bringing them into the Nerd Out community.
Nerd Out has a zero tolerance policy for harassment. #NerdsUnite
Risks and challenges

We already have a wire frame which is a map of how the app will work, as well as a list of requirements that have been sent to Zach. App build will take about 7-9 weeks. Zach has created a number of apps, some of his creations have been acquired by companies such as Twitter. If you have any questions about the Kickstarter, shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave us a comment.
