Every year I vow to write more--and then December rolls around and I'm left wondering how the year went by so quickly. The good thing about goals is that they're always better together, so rather than just promising myself I'm going to write more, I'm going to use my writing goal as a way to connect with others and try something I've never done before.
Over the coming weeks and months I'm going to write 100 new poems and short stories, and then I'm going to mail each one to a backer like you.
What's so special about these poems, you ask? As a backer, you'll give me a writing prompt to inspire the poem or piece of prose. Perhaps you want a story about wolves living on Mars, a sonnet that uses the words "bureaucrat" and "collusion" with a theme of current events, a story set in medieval France about an orphaned girl who discovers a time machine, or maybe a love poem for your special someone on Valentine's Day.* The world is your palette, and I am your painter. I'll work with each of you to make something special.
But wait, there's more!
Every postcard will feature art inspired by backers. Writing is my passion, but I've also dabbled in digital media and drawing, so up to four new art pieces will grace the 100 postcards mailed to backers--and you won't know which picture is on yours until it arrives.
In a world of emails and eReaders, the joy of receiving something handwritten in the mail has almost entirely vanished. Backing this project will help spread this joy for you and almost 100 others around the world.
* Valentine's Day requests will be accepted through January 31. Select the "Postcard Poem" (short or free verse) tier and send me a personal message. Poems will be mailed to your Valentine on standard letter paper and you'll receive a thank-you postcard once they are printed. Limited to the first twenty requests.
Art for All: 100 Backer Goal
If this project reaches 100 backers, I will compile all the poetry, prose, and art inspired by this campaign into a PDF to share with all backers.
The Fine Print
Want to know how I'm dividing the budget? Look at this nifty graphic!
A portion of any surplus funds will be donated to the Office of Letters and Light, the organization sponsoring NaNoWriMo.
Additionally, I also plan to publish many pieces inspired by this campaign on my writing blog to spread the joy of reading even further. Poems and stories will only be published after they have been mailed to backers. Furthermore, if a Valentine's Day poem is considered too personal to post online, those backers may request it to be excluded from my blog.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter campaign, but I'm a seasoned backer and I've seen how many things can go wrong. Price increases (especially for shipping), factory delays, weather delays, creative delays... and the list goes on. Thankfully, this project has no manufacturing components, and I've already budgeted for unexpected cost increases.
Of course, I'm also a full-time teacher in my last semester of grad school, so time delays are a real possibility--that's why I've added a couple months to the expected rewards date just in case creative or work-related delays drag me down. After all, I feel it's better to be surprised by an early reward rather than disappointed by delays.
The PDF compilation also depends on backers providing writing prompts in a timely manner, so coordinating inspiration from a hundred people may delay this reward.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
