A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
KIZINGO's mission is to design products that are rooted in science and built to promote health in families and independence in kids - especially at the dinner table. Our flagship product is a toddler spoon, designed to work with the way kids hold utensils when they are learning to eat. Because of our design, it is easier for kids to successfully feed themselves, which research tells us is critical for the development of healthy eating habits.
We launched with right-handed spoons in March 2016 and are ready to expand our product line to include LEFT-HANDED spoons. We're turning to the Kickstarter community for help.
Over the last 3 decades, obesity rates in the US have tripled, due to changes in our diets, levels of physical activity, and the environment in which we live.
Of children aged 2-5 years old, nearly 23% are overweight or obese. Among those that are, there is a 60% chance that they will carry this excess weight throughout childhood and into adolescence.
There is a large and growing body of research that show that the period of time when kids are learning to self-feed - when they are transitioning to solid foods - is a crucial period when food habits are established. And increasingly we know that patterns created during this period influence eating behaviors all the way into adulthood.
Thus, it is critical that we provide the right tools for children to learn to self-feed successfully.
There are a number of features that make our spoons special. Kizingo spoons are:
Made in the USA!
Designed in Blacksburg, VA - by parents, FOR KIDS
Safe for your little ones (no BPA, Phthalates, PVC, or Lead)
Made of FDA-approved plastic which is made in the USA
Specifically designed to encourage self-feeding
Rooted in science, focused on health
Meant to build confidence and independence
People have a lot to say about our spoons. Here's a little taste:
Kizingo co-founder and creator, Kiyah Duffey, is a nationally recognized nutrition expert. Her research has examined how the foods we eat impact our health, especially weight gain and heart disease. Kiyah's research has been featured in numerous media outlets including Oprah's O Magazine, the NBC Nightly News, Good Morning America and NPR's Morning Edition. But she's also a mom (to three little ones). After having kids, Kiyah realized that most tools meant for kids to use at mealtime don't actually work to support and encourage healthy habits. This is especially true of kids' utensils: even child-sized ones are poorly designed for how kids hold them. And Kiyah knew, based on research and her own experience, these "traditional" utensils would not encourage behavior that truly promoted health. So, with the support and encouragement of her co-founder, Lisa Sutherland, Kizingo was born.
Why Your Support Matters
Every dollar we make is poured back into our company, as we continue to innovate and design products to promote our mission. With your support, we can finally bring mealtime success and independent feeding to all those LEFT-HANDED eaters out there! Your money will be used to:
Purchase left-handed spoons ($2,075)
Create left-handed packages- blister cards and custom designed blisters ($1,700)
Buy the tool needed to package the spoons ($725)
Risks and challenges
The KIZINGO team feels confident that our preparation and partnerships will result in timely, full-scale production with minimal risk. We are working with a phenomenal manufacturing team, based in New York State, who has years of experience delivering high-quality products in large quantities. What’s more, they are currently making our right-handed version, which has been selling successfully since March 2016.
Here are some setbacks that could arise:
Manufacturing: There is a possibility we will encounter challenges with the mold creation process. However, since our plant has experience with our right-handed version, we don't anticipate any issues with tooling.
Fulfillment: There is always the possibility that a supplier will miss a deadline, a machine breaks down, or a shipment gets lost. To minimize the possibility of manufacturing setbacks we have a stringent contract in place outlining production specifics (e.g., lead time). Additionally, we are using the same vendors (for tool production, plastic materials and packaging supply) and fulfillment and shipping to maximize their proven experience.
Safety: Our right-handed spoons are made with FDA-approved, BPA, Lead, PVC, and Phthalate-free plastic and they have passed the most rigorous safety standards in the US and EU. Backers can rest assured that the same level of rigor will be applied to the sourcing and testing for our left-handed spoons.
