This December I will be presenting my first solo art show, consisting of prints and original pieces inspired by the works of Irish illuminators from the middle ages. My primary source of inspiration is The Book of Kells and the magnificent designs found within.
Among the paintings I intend to display, there are over twenty which are currently unframed. If this project is successful, I will use the funds to purchase framing materials, and other items to prepare my show.
I make my paintings using a mixed-media technique. I begin by transferring my original line-drawn designs onto Canson pastel paper, then I use watercolor paint to block in areas of color. I then use colored pencils to create the line art and precise details; this involves a lot of pencil sharpening.
Here are some brief descriptions of the paintings which I intend to include in the show:
The Four Elements:
These are my earliest pieces, and among the largest I have ever done. The originals were given as gifts to my sisters and brothers several years ago. They are the embodiments of the four classical elements;
Undine (Water)
Salamander (Fire)
Gnome (Earth)
Sylph (Air)
The Zodiac:
This is my largest series to date. I will have giclee prints on display during the show, since most of the originals have been sold.
The Triplicities:
Original pieces, most of which will be on display for the first time during this show. This series is made up of three sets of three paintings, each variations on a common design.
The Masculine Aspects; The Warrior, The Poet, and The Priest
The Feminine Aspects; The Maiden, The Mother, and The Crone
The Cosmic Aspects; The Earth, The Sea, and The Sky
If time and funding allows, I hope to include additional original pieces.
