Kalpazan presents REHEARSAL FOR MODERN TIMES
directors: Gökçen Ergene & Vuk Mitevski
lighting design: Garin Marschall
choreography: Nicole Daunic
After a bit of a hiatus from live performance, we've decided to return to the stage. During that time, we've found ourselves going back to the pure art of stop-motion and discovered that it's the simplest combination of everything we want to do, paint, sculpt, write and film. While working with stop-motion, we've noticed a hidden sense in it that calls out to live performance.
Long story short, through that probe, we've found ourselves once again looking for ways to combine live performance with animation and decided to structure our next live show "Rehearsal for Modern Times" around that idea. "Rehearsal for Modern Times" is a one-hour theatrical show that will premier at the Clemente Soto Velez Theater in New York City in February. The cast consists of 8 characters, the protagonist, 8 technical staff and the set itself acting as an animated character. The show examines the technological paradoxes of modern and archaic human life. The story is witnessed through a combination of stop-motion, dance-theater and visual interactions within the set. Lighting for the show will be designed by our long-time collaborator Garin Marschall.
We've already secured funding for the production and the animation segments of the show, where we need your help is the rehearsal phase, which requires a versatile space in New York for intensive rehearsals with the cast in the months of January and February. Please look at our previous work on our website and for more detailed information about the show. If you like what we do and would like to contribute to our exploration for new platforms in stop-motion animation theater and dance, we'll be forever grateful to you for enriching our work. You can donate at different levels and if we exceed our funding goal, the extra funds will be used to compensate everyone who's involved in the show from technical staff to our actors and dancers. You can see a breakdown of our budget below. Thank you and cheers.
