About this project
10 HOURS REMAIN ~ INTERVIEW!
The Outhousers' Christian Hoffer has published a very nice piece for us - another last day surprise.
Check it HERE.
LAST DAY ~ ONE FINAL REWARD!
On our last day, we're happy to announce a final reward. Below, you'll see an original page of art by Aaron McConnell, artist of The Gettysburg Address, The Graphic Adaptation of The U.S. Constitution, and The 13th Age. Aaron's dynamic battle scene is rendered in India ink on Bristol at 22" x 13.5" and is available for a pledge of $325. Thanks, Aaron!
Thanks again to all our backers who are busy posting and tweeting us all over creation. We know you want color (just check the comments if you don't believe me) We want it too! Let's keep it rolling to the end . . . FOR COLOR!
(if you're just tuning in, at $33K, we achieve our sole stretch goal, to have the book colored by Val using a watercolor treatment.)
Thanks to our fabulous backers, we've made our goal! Amazing!
We have one stretch goal. At $33K, this book will be colored by Val using a watercolor treatment. This also means that every page of original art purchased will have color applied to the actual page. (no digital watercolor here) It will be a great addition to this book.
Let's make it happen! THANK YOU!!
Val and Jim
70 HOURS REMAIN ~ 93% FUNDED + NEW REWARD!
We are very nearly there. THANK YOU!
Please keep the traffic up with reposting, tweeting and good 'ole fashioned talk around the comic rack . . . And if you've been waiting in the wings this past month, considering whether or not you should grab a book, you should! And now is most definitely the time.
We do have one last reward to offer. Please see it below. It's the watercolor piece you see featured in our second video. Along with the art, you'll get a DVD of its creation in real time.
REWARD LIMITS EXTENDED
Due to the popularity of our "YOU'RE IN THE BOOK" rewards, and because we're so close to meeting our goal, Val has authorized an increase in the number of rewards, both the standard "YOU'RE IN THE BOOK" reward at $300 and the reward + the page at $500. Snatch 'em up!!
Val and Jim
We have one week to go and we are nearly there. One quarter is still a big chunk, but we are confident and hopeful that we're going to make it. This week, we plan to keep spreading the word and we hope that you'll help us by continuing to repost, tweet, and just generally talk us up.
We have 2 new rewards that you'll see featured below and described at right
THANK YOU. We'll update again in another couple of days with another new original art reward.Val and Jim
FEAST YOUR EYES!
To celebrate our half-way mark (we're actually %55 right now) - we created a little video featuring Val doing an awesome time-lapse sketch over a little explanation of how this project came together. Enjoy!
Thank you. We're nearly half-way there with just over 2 weeks to go. Help us continue to spread the word by reposting this link on Facebook and Twitter - Without your support, we couldn't do this . . . and we really want to make this book - So thanks again.
Also, we were mentioned on Comic Bastards here - check it out! http://comicbastards.com/kickstarter-of-dust-and-blood-the-battle-of-the-little-big-horn/
OF DUST AND BLOOD: A Story from Custer’s Fight at The Greasy Grass, is an original graphic novel from writer Jim Berry and veteran illustrator, Val Mayerik. The story details the day of The Battle At The Little Big Horn through the eyes of Greenhaw, a 7th Cavalry scout on one side of the battlefield, and Slowhawk, a young Lakota warrior on the other.
Our goal is to produce a book that focuses on a compelling drama while also being as historically accurate as possible via quotes and documented actions on every page. There will be featured appearances by the famous protagonists of the day - G.A. Custer, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse - but we’ve chosen to focus on two fictional characters, and use them as lenses to show what it might have been like on that hot afternoon in 1876 for two ordinary men pressed into battle.
OF DUST AND BLOOD will be a limited run, 90-page, hardcover book with a landscape format sized 10.5" x 7". Every book will be numbered and signed. Also, everyone who contributes will be thanked in the book.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH THE MONEY ~ The money will go completely into the production of the art, the letters (by another comic legend, Tom Orzechowski), the publication, and the distribution of all rewards to you. If we make our stretch goal of $33000, Val will hand color the book.
OUR STORY ~ Following a great collaboration on a short movie project, successfully funded on Kickstarter, we began working on this book nearly 2 years ago. As the idea started to take on a life of its own, we realized we needed to invest ourselves fully and create a story that would honor this piece of history from both sides of the conflict. There are literally hundreds of books that detail the events of the time but there are no long form graphic novels on the subject and certainly no narrative pieces that attempt to present opposing angles of perspective on the day of the battle.
Risks and challenges
No real risks. We'll have the book printed overseas so shipping may be challenging (We've never done it but we have a very experienced printer) - Distribution of all the rewards is also a challenge but we're both organized pros and we are very dedicated to the complete satisfaction of our backers. Much research has gone into the production of this book and we're both fully committed to fulfilling everyone's rewards - Our hope is that we'll be able to predict and overcome any challenge that comes our way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
When the art is finished, we'll upload scans of every available page to Dropbox. Pages will be made available according to the order of the backers (but they will all be awesome so order really doesn't matter) The book is packed with quiet scenes, action, characters both famous and infamous, beautiful landscapes . . . and lots of horses. So the pages will reflect a nice variety.
