Who is Niall?
Niall Noígíallach, translated in English as Niall of the Nine Hostages, was the renowned High King of Ireland during the late 4th and early 5th centuries, AD. Niall and the Stone of Destiny is a historical fiction inspired by the 2006 DNA discovery made by Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland that gives evidence of Niall's nearly 3 million descendants worldwide.
Common surnames believed to be descended from Niall
If you recognize one of the last names below from your own family tree, it's very possible that you are a descendant of Niall and you might consider doing a DNA test to learn more. Even if you don't recognize a last name from the tree below, if you have ancestry linking back to Northern Ireland, there's a good chance you're somehow related to the Ui Neill Dynasty.
The Stone of Destiny
The Lia Fail, or the Stone of Destiny, sits atop the Hill of Tara, just 28 miles northwest of Dublin, Ireland. For centuries, the stone marked the coronation site for many High Kings of Ireland and according to Celtic myth, personified magical powers.
My inspiration to write and illustrate the story of Niall came after my FamilyTreeDNA results arrived and I learned that I am descended from a great Irish King who reigned over all of Ireland more than 1,500 years ago.
But I wasn’t always this interested in ancestry. It was actually my Great Aunt Mary who first introduced me to the McNeill Family tree when I was only about 10 or 11 years old. Back then though, it seemed like just a bunch of name and old dates to me; I didn’t really appreciate it.
It wasn’t until many years later, after my Aunt Mary passed, that I started researching my family tree online and rediscovered those same names and dates, but this time I realized that each of them had their own unique story. Niall’s journey marks the trail-head in my research to better understand my family tree and I want to share what I’ve learned in a format that is interesting and engaging to a younger generation.

Risks and challenges
This isn't my first rodeo. I authored and self-published the Comprehensive Crowdfunding Guide on Amazon.com two years ago, so I understand the process of editing, printing and self-publishing.
I'm also mitigating risk with a lean approach to this project. The story of Niall is really 3 times longer than this first book, but by breaking the story up into an iterative series, I can keep overall costs down and receive much needed feedback from early adopters. I'm aiming for a limited printing run of 200 books for this launch, a realistic and achievable goal. I've done the research on printing and shipping costs and have certainty that if the funding goal is reached, I will have sufficient funding to deliver as promised.
