Help me create issue #1 of Right to Copy, a magazine about copyright and art.
In our interview in the first issue of Right to Copy, Jonathan Lethem says:
"mostly when people say something is original they just mean they don't know where it came from."
Right to Copy will try to find out if that's true. And in doing that, it will consider and challenge what copyright does to art, artists and audiences – discussing authorship, ownership, originality, inspiration, plagiarism, piracy and more.
The first issue
Roughly 60 pages, printed on newspaper - so you can easily share it with friends, or pass it on when you're finished. The first issue will include:
- New York Times bestseller Jonathan Lethem discussing his essay The Ecstasy of Influence, cross-pollination of ideas, and plagiarism.
- an extract from author and activist Cory Doctorow's book INFORMATION DOESN’T WANT TO BE FREE, plus some additional thoughts from the author.
- artist Charles Avery on his work to depict the life, times and culture of a fictional island, and what that work says about authenticity, authorship and power.
- designer Esther Meijer on being copied by a large clothing brand, and how it changed her views on what originality means.
There'll also be essays looking at the law, including one on YouTube's attempts to police copyright infringement and what it does to video uploaders.
Why it matters
Because we're always discussing copyright when we discuss art - we just don't always know it.
If concepts like authorship, influence and originality have such a bearing on how we make and enjoy art, we need to open the discussion up; to talk about it outside the legal world. We need to claim it for what is: a part of culture.

Risks and challenges
While every project has risks, I've deliberately started small with the first issue of Right to Copy so that I can mitigate them.
90% of the content is finished, laid out, and ready to print. I've chosen a printer. I've checked, double-checked, and triple-checked shipping rates to make sure I can afford everything anybody has asked for. And I'm already starting to plan issue #2!
