From visiting families on holidays, to attending business overseas or interstate, suitcases have built the very basis of our travels from the first flight. We trust our luggage to safely transport our most beloved items of clothing, electronics, shopping, gifts and souvenirs, and fragile items throughout our entire trip. However, with airline weight allocations developing absurdly strict regulations, there is no denying that suitcases must be weighed and double-checked at home before boarding our flights.
While some of us may have relatively light suitcases ready to fill with overseas treasures, the majority of passengers boarding have incredibly heavy luggage that is simply a workout in itself to lift onto a bathroom scale. Individuals who have recently undergone operations, or those who were born with a small and fragile build cannot meekly avoid the weighing process.
This is a strenuous task involving weighing the suitcase itself, packing it, weighing it- and if overweight, having to repeat this task and repacking it all over again.
TUL is a suitcase with a built-in weighing function. Simply close the lid of the designated suitcase, and without having to entirely enclose the zips, the press of a single button will let you know the weight of your luggage.
The weighing scale is built-into the suitcase to eliminate the need to lift the suitcase up just to know its weight. Sensors are installed at the base of the suitcase while the electronics are installed inside the suitcase. This weighing function has incorporated the weight of the empty suitcase into its reading, eliminating the extra hassle for you. The weighing scale is powered by a rechargeable external battery pack.
By simply pressing an ‘ON’ button, the weight of your luggage will be displayed on the LCD screen. The scale will be automatically turned off after 1 minute to preserve battery life.
TUL also comes with an external suitcase protection jacket. PoronXRD, a premium impact resistant material, has been used to make this specifically designed suitcase jacket. This jacket will protect the sensors, LCD screen and luggage lock from potential damage during airline handling process.
By using this suitcase jacket, it will also eliminate the needs for suitcase wrapping which costs $13 for each suitcase and for each time you travel. Not to mention that being able to re-use your suitcase jacket is environmentally a better option than using plastic wrapping.
As well, the looks of the suitcase is preserved under this jacket and if this jacket is dirty or worn out, it will be better for you economically to replace the jacket as opposed to an entire suitcase.
TUL suitcase jacket uses velcro and its tight-fit design to secure itself with the suitcase.
It is also easy and convenient to take off.
And just in case you fancy watching it fell from around 2.5m height...
While having our specifically designed suitcase jacket on, TUL is water resistant, giving you a peace of mind while taking your suitcase into the rain.
TUL also comes with luggage lock that satisfies Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements.
“TSA screens every passenger's baggage before it is placed on an airplane. While our technology allows us to electronically screen bags, there are times when we need to physically inspect a piece of luggage. TSA has worked with several companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal "master" keys so that the locks may not have to be cut.” – www.tsa.gov
Inside TUL, there are multiple pockets and compartments which gives you the option to easily access your favourite items as well as separating your toiletry from your other items.
By placing TUL on a hard surface and start packing your luggage. After closing the lid of TUL, you can press a button for the weight of TUL to be displayed on the LCD screen. The LCD screen will be turned off automatically after 1 minute.
TUL luggage jacket can be put on from the top when TUL is place vertically. Velcro stripe is located at the bottom of the jacket so after sealing the Velcro stripe, the jacket will remain on TUL despite harsh luggage handling by your favourite airlines.
TUL is 64cm x 42cm x 25cm. The weight is to be confirmed but we're guessing it would be around 4kg - in the same range as other hard-case suitcases. The TUL (Large), 71cm x 47cm x 28cm, is also available now for an additional $50 to your pledge amount.
Please note: All the product images and videos shown throughout the Kickstarter campaign are mock ups and prototypes, we are aiming for at least this quality but please understand that the final attributes of the products are subject to change.
TUL also contains a patent pending technology.
International backers: Please note that you will be responsible for any VAT or GST as well, it is also worth considering your country's import regulations before pledging. One thing we can promise is that we will try our best to get the suitcase to you.
Risks and challenges
Hi everyone! It's Knight here. For a little more info about me, please check out the 'About us' section.
I have spent the last year developing TUL and finally have working prototype.
The next steps are to:
- Ensure the sensor mounting unit is working and durable (September 2014)
- Ensure the LCD screen is integrated into the suitcase neatly with proper seal so that splash of water cannot get through the gap around the LCD screen (October 2014)
- ‘ON’ and ‘RESET’ button are clearly distinguished either by type or by colour (October 2014)
- Finalising the exterior design of the suitcase (October 2014)
- Producing the testing lot and checking its quality (October 2014)
- Mass production of TUL (November 2014)
- Shipping TUL to Kickstarter backers for Christmas orders (December 2014)
- Shipping TUL to Kickstarter backers for Easter orders (March 2015)
- Shipping TUL to pre-orders (April 2015)
- TUL available for retail (May 2015)
The biggest challenge will be to remain on schedule and meet our deadlines. The production will take place overseas so keeping constant communication with our production partners is in itself a challenge. Keeping our backers informed and responding to our backers’ questions in a timely manner will also be a challenge but we promise we will do our best to keep everything going smoothly.
It is honestly the first time I am doing anything like this, apart from the theoretical design course I did when I was completing my Bachelor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering degree. Whilst not being very experienced myself, I am surrounded by my family who have been involved in businesses for more than 30 years. I also have a business partner overseas who is very experienced in this line of work. I have also personally paid a visit to the factory as well as being in contact with lawyers regarding IP and patents. So I strongly believe I have adequate cover in these areas that I lack.
Having been on Kickstarter since 2012 and backed 36 projects on Kickstarter to date myself, I am aware of mistakes and flaws project creators could make so I will try my very best to avoid them. It will be new and challenging but I am more than confident that I could bring this project to life. So I really hope I get your support to bring this project into a reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
