Weston Super Sonic is back and is looking to host its 4th convention this Autumn on Saturday 21st October.
Weston Super Sonic is an event that was originally created back in January of 2014. It’s hard to believe that from beginnings as humble as this, we were able to move on to such bigger and better things. 2015 proved to be the biggest show that the pair of us had ever done, with nearly 200 people coming through the doors on the day to take part in our tournaments, watch our panels, and meet a wide range of industry guests. We improved on the event in 2016, after running a successful Kickstarter campaign, with more activities and, exhibitors and even cake!
In October of 2017, a jump from our usual date, we’re hoping to return to The Grand Pier’s regency suite. 2015 and 2016 demonstrated to us that it was an excellent venue for WSS, providing plenty of space for a stage, exhibitors, and most importantly lots of attendees.
It’s also perfectly equipped for an event of this type, especially when you have one of the largest arcades in the country just downstairs.
After working on and subsequently putting on the 2015 and 2016 show, we know exactly what works, and what doesn't for this kind of event, meaning that we’re more than ready and prepared for the event ahead. In addition, we’re familiar with our venue, and they’re familiar with us, meaning that there’s very little that can stand in the way from an organisation standpoint.
So why do we need a Kickstarter for the event?
To begin with, we are an unofficial event, which means we do not get any financial aid with the event from any sponsors. In 2015, we were very fortunate to do exceptionally well with two fundraising auctions and some very generous donations which ended up providing an enormous chunk of the funds we needed, and allowed us to create some truly great extras and invite a load of brilliant guests. For 2016 we raised enough on Kickstarter to run another successful event, as well as receive some very generous prize donations from the Official Sonic Merchandise store and Sega Europe. Thanks to the publicity of the campaign and the support from our backers.
In order to keep control of the event for the community, we ask the community to support the event, as a sponsored event might limit a lot of what we can do for you guys. Although we get donations from our exhibitors, this is not enough to fully fund the event.
What do we use the funds for?
Like any good size convention, quite a large chunk of the funds go into the hire of the venue. Our venue of choice is the Grand Pier in Weston Super Mare. Not only are we familiar with the venue and it can cater to all our needs, but it is also the largest venue available to us, able to hold around 200 people. If we wish to keep it in Weston Super Mare. In order to make sure we can invite as many people as possible to the event, we want to stick with this venue, which many of our visitors love.
There's also a variety of technical pieces we hire for the venue, such as the stage, tables, seating, WiFi, T.Vs for the consoles.
If you've looked at the page already, you’ll see that we've set our initial target pretty low at only £1000. This is simply because it’s the bare minimum we would need to be able to put on a basic event for you guys. A basic event would include various traders of Sonic merchandise, events for the stage, and gaming competitions. All of which made up a big part of our event the last 2 years. This cost also covers entry for every attendee to the pier’s magnificent amusement arcade, which is one of the largest of its kind in the country If you’re wondering where other things like guests and goody bags come into all this, that’s where our stretch goals come in. £1000 is enough to get the event going, but further funding will allow us to invite some awesome guests along to join the fun as well.
We have a whole range of various pledge rewards available for backers, including tickets to our 2017 event. You’ll be able to find full details of these rewards on the right of the screen! So to returning attendees and potential new ones… Thanks a bunch for your time. Both of us hope to see you back in Weston Super-Mare in 2017 to make even more awesome Sonic memories.
We have a brand new tier of rewards for this year, to celebrate Sonic Forces, Fan Character Rewards!
At one point or another, a lot of us have had fan characters, which we have inserted into our own Sonic Universes. Some of us have done it on our own, or even used them to interact with other fans in the community. To celebrate Sonic Forces' announcement of the custom character creation, we're going to be offering fan character rewards!
£5 Fan Character Award
With the £5 reward tier, you can have your very own fan character drawn and coloured. So even if you can't make the event, you can support the event and get a little reward for yourself! All the characters drawn will appear in our thank you video on the day of the event, as well as being sent a digital copy of the finished picture. You will also have a bonus option, which will be discussed below. There is also a tier for those who wish to attend and have a character drawn!
Of course there's no point in running a Kickstarter for an event if no one can attend it! Our basic reward tier is for Tickets to Weston Super Sonic 2017 on Saturday 21st October. We'll have a few basic reward tiers for single or group tickets, so if you only want to attend the event, you'll have the option.
Pin Badge Rewards
Our pin badge rewards are back! Take a look at this beauty we produced for last year's event!
To carry on what we hope to have as a WSS tradition, one of our rewards for certain tiers will be the Weston Super Sonic Pin Badge. Every year we've had button badges for all backers, but for a little extra, you can get your hands on one of these lovely metal badges. This year's badge will look a little like this:
Also returning this year is the WSS T-shirt. The plan for this year will also be tied in with the fan character reward. For those who opt in, your fan character will feature on the WSS 2017 t-shirt! We've no idea how this will pan out, as we will either only have a few characters, or A LOT. As we won't have a set number yet until the Kickstarter is over, we can't set out a design, but we're hoping to make this design as insane as possible with your help!
Risks and challenges
The main risk and major challenge is our basic goal, raising the £1000 we require to hire the Grand Pier, basic equipment required and reward fulfilment. If we are unsuccessful, we will still look at hosting the event, but the venue will likely not be as central as we would have liked.
Although the venue is indoors, there is always the risk that flooding may cause travel disruption. Although major floods is highly unlikely, we will work with our backers should the worst happen. We will host the event despite the weather, unless the Grand Pier advises against (and we would discuss with the pier event organisers about rescheduling).
Due to the change in date, there may a change to the number or variety of guests we invite, so we may not have some of our regular special guests. There is the chance that we may not be able to invite as many guests this year as last year, but this will be dependant on how well our fundraising goes. If we are able to hit the £1000 goal, we should be able to invite at least one special guest, with the hope to squeeze enough out of the funds to invite two.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
