Weston Super Sonic is an event that was originally created back in January of 2014. It’s hard to believe that from beginnings as humble as this, we were able to move on to such bigger and better things. 2015 proved to be the biggest show that the pair of us had ever done, with nearly 200 people coming through the doors on the day to take part in our tournaments, watch our panels, and meet a wide range of industry guests.
Now we’re back, and we want to put on another great show for Sonic Fans to get involved with.
In January of 2016, we’re hoping to return here: The Grand Pier’s regency suite. 2015 demonstrated to us that it was an excellent venue for WSS, providing plenty of space for a stage, exhibitors, and most importantly lots of attendees. It’s also perfectly equipped for an event of this type, especially when you have one of the largest arcades in the country just downstairs.
After working on and subsequently putting on the 2015 show, we know exactly what works, and what doesn't for this kind of event, meaning that we’re more than ready and prepared for the event ahead. In addition, we’re familiar with our venue, and they’re familiar with us, meaning that there’s very little that can stand in the way from an organisation standpoint.
This of course begs the question: If we were able to do all that last year without a kickstarter, why do we need one for 2016?
To begin with, we are an unofficial event. We’re not backed by any major sponsors like SEGA. Last year, we were very fortunate to do exceptionally well with two fundraising auctions and some very generous donations which ended up providing an enormous chunk of the funds we needed, and allowed us to create some truly great extras and invite a load of brilliant guests. Unfortunately, due to the nature of what we were auctioning last year, we can’t take that approach this time, which is why we’re asking you guys directly to help us.
Hi guys, This is Ferran Rodríguez. In case you don’t remember me, let me say I was one of artists who worked on the early issues of STC.
Just wanted to tell you that I was one of the lucky guys who attended as a guest to Weston Super Sonic 2015. I must say it was a funny time. Although it wasn't the biggest of conventions, give them some time, there were good staff wherever you look at, great artists and people rounding everywhere with a big smile on their faces.
I have to mention Jonathan and Claire, a couple of hard workers who, joined with some friends, kept all together and running. Anyhow, I truly believe Weston Super Sonic is an event that must be kept in mind and supported, so, if you have the opportunity of attending to, don’t hesitate just do it. If you don’t have it, perhaps you could help them to build it in some way, I'm sure you’ll be welcomed anyway.
Embraces from Barcelona
If you've looked at the page already, you’ll see that we've set our initial target pretty low at only £1000. This is simply because it’s the bare minimum we would need to be able to put on a basic event for you guys. It would cover things like the hire of the suite, televisions to use, a stage and generally all of our running costs.
A basic event would include various traders of Sonic merchandise, events for the stage, and gaming competitions. All of which made up a big part of our event last year. This cost also covers entry for every attendee to the pier’s magnificent amusement arcade, which is one of the largest of its kind in the country
If you’re wondering where other things like guests and goody bags come into all this, that’s where our stretch goals come in. £1000 is enough to get the event going, but further funding will allow us to invite some awesome guests along to join the fun as well. We've already had interest from some of 2015’s attending guests to return. such as Duncan Gutteridge and Ferran Rodriguez amongst others, and we certainly wouldn't be happier to see them return. As well as returning guests, we've also had some new faces that have expressed their interest in attending, including Sonic the Comic’s original editor in chief Richard Burton.
We’d love to invite our 2015 guests back to Weston along with all these new ones, but again, getting them here depends on how well we do.
Since we'll be celebrating the start of Sonic's 25th Anniversary, we want to try and do as much as we can. We would really appreciate as much help as possible. We have a whole line of extra benchmarks in store if we smash our £1000 goal, most of them inviting special guests and getting more goodies for all attendees!
We have a whole range of various pledge rewards available for backers, including tickets to our 2016 event, badges, t-shirts and even goodie bags from last year's event, for those who want a little bit extra. You’ll be able to find full details of these rewards on the right of the screen!
So to returning attendees and potential new ones… Thanks a bunch for your time. Both of us hope to see you back in Weston Super-Mare in 2016 to make even more awesome Sonic memories.
Risks and challenges
The main risk and major challenge is our basic goal, raising the £1000 we require to hire the Grand Pier. If we are unsuccessful, we will still look at hosting the event, but the venue will likely not be as central as we would have liked.
One of the major factors regarding the date of the event is the weather. Although the venue is indoors, there is always the risk that snow may cause travel disruption. Although snow is highly unlikely, we will work with our backers should the worst happen. We will host the event despite the weather, unless the Grand Pier advises against (and we would discuss with the pier event organisers about rescheduling).
Due to us not being able to call upon our very generous auctions this time, there is the chance that we may not be able to invite as many guests this year as last year, but this will be dependant on how well our fundraising goes. But as a promise to all of our backers, as long as we raise our £1000 goal, the team at WSS will personally fund one guest to join us, with any other funds going towards inviting others.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
