The Open Press is a fledgling letterpress, printmaking, and book arts co-op based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Sparked by a 2012 MakeWork grant, and the generosity of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, founding members Matt Greenwell and Paul Rustand have worked together to assemble printmaking and letterpress equipment from private individuals and public institutions. Our goal is to provide access to a unique and under-utilized artistic resource in Chattanooga, and to build a community of fine artists and craftspeople around this equipment and knowledge.
The Open Press will be located in Downtown Chattanooga, TN, on the corner of Market and 14th street, and we're already working with volunteers to get the space ship-shape and ready for use. The dream is almost a reality, but dreams don't become real on their own.
Right now, we need your help in the final stages of opening the studio. Your donations will help cover the costs of plumbing and electrical improvements, as well as an initial inventory of papers, inks, and the host of other supplies and materials we need to open the press to Chattanooga.
Join us in launching The Open Press: Chattanooga's Letterpress, Printmaking, and Book Arts Cooperative.
Risks and challenges
Our primary challenge to make The Open Press sustainable in the long term. This will take more than just love. We're working to develop an administrative and operational model for a member-based co-operative that will cover costs of operations as a 501(c)3 non-profit institution. Paul and Matt are working with a core team of backers to lay out budgets, guiding principles, and programming initiatives that will support and sustain the mission of The Open Press long into the future. The monetary contributions from this campaign are essential, but the long-term viability of The Open Press will ultimately depend on the collective vision and dedication of its members.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
