About

Adopt-a-Collection

Welcome to Project AAC!

HSP has thousands of collections containing over 21 million items that make up its archives. Our mission to make history accessible to all. History must not be forgotten!

Some collections come to HSP in terrible shape, in need of repair and conservation. Project AAC gives life to each collection that needs a boost before our researchers, students, and friends are able to use them. This month, Project AAC features the Austrian-American Society records.

The Austrian-American Society of Pennsylvania was founded in 1981 as the Austrian Society of Pennsylvania. Its mission was to promote and foster an appreciation for the Austrian culture regionally and state-wide.

Societies like this one have existed for hundreds of years in order to support their members through the immigration and resettlement process. The records of AASOP are a vital part of Pennsylvania’s history honoring traditions and culture of Austrian immigrants and their descendants.

HSP currently holds the AASOP collection, and these additional items consist of a series of administrative and financial files dating from the 1990s and 2000s, as well as three volumes containing minutes, bylaws, incorporation documents, correspondence, and financial papers. The volumes each date from 1981-1985, 1986-2000, and 2001-2016. There are also two embossers with variations of the AASOP's seal and a medal that was made for the 100th anniversary of the city of Dornbirn, Austria.

This campaign will fund the cataloging, rehousing, and shelving of the newfound AASOP records, making them accessible to all. Join us in raising $400 to meet our goal!

Risks and challenges

Cataloging and preparing collections for research can take time, and turn up surprises! We'll do our best to get everything done (including your rewards!) in the allotted time, but may run a little behind. We promise to keep you up to date, though, and let you know all the interesting stories the collection has!
