BRUSHSTROKES IN HOLLYWOOD is a feature length documentary film about pioneering Chinese American artist and Disney Legend, Tyrus Wong.

New and Original. Receive a set of 6 storyboards drawn especially for the film by Tyrus Wong. These storyboads illustrate significant stages in Tyrus's life,  including his trip from China, his first years in America living in Sacramento's Chinatown, his days as an art student at Otis Art Institute, creating production illustrations on a Warner Bros. backlot, painting in his fine art studio, and creating one of his famous kites.

At 102 years young, Tyrus Wong is a living legend.  To art lovers, he's a renowned painter who once exhibited with Picasso. To film buffs, he’s the visual genius behind such classic films as Bambi and Rebel Without a Cause. To Southern California beach-goers, he's the innovative kite designer whose colorful creations fill the sky. To the Chinese in America, he's a pioneer. And to a filmmaker, he's the kind of subject one dreams of -- talented, determined, funny, and wise.

Brushstrokes In Hollywood is the first in-depth portrait of the art, life, and enduring impact of Tyrus Wong. The film takes the audience on a remarkable journey -- from his birthplace of Guangzhou, China in 1910 to the boarding houses of LA's old Chinatown and the studios of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The film explores his formative years as a young WPA artist and the influence of Sung Dynasty art on his work. At a 102, Tyrus continues to live the life of an artist. We see him today, still vibrant, flying his magnificent creations high above the Pacific Ocean -- the same waters he crossed as a young boy over 90 years ago.

The film includes original filmed scenes of Tyrus, interviews, archival footage and photos, clips and concept art from early Hollywood movies, animation by renowned animator James Baxter (Kung Fu Panda, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast) and over 80 years of Tyrus Wong artwork -- much of it rare and never before seen. Brushstrokes in Hollywood captures the richness and texture of Tyrus's career while also revealing the inner life and character of this rare individual.

Our "CAST" includes (partial list) Tyrus Wong, best selling writer Lisa See,  animation artists and writers Don Hahn, Charles Solomon, Eric Goldberg, John Canemaker, Paul Felix, Milton Quon, Alice and Marc Davis, art curators Sonia Mak, Bill Stern, Ellen Harrington, Mark Johnson, California watercolor expert Gordon McLelland, and Hollywood film historian Joe Musso.

Hi, I'm Pamela Tom, the director of Brushstrokes in Hollywood. What intrigued me most about Tyrus Wong was his seemingly endless reservoirs of talent, combined with a deep and genuine humility. I was also fascinated by the realization that Tyrus was absolutely destined to become an artist. Despite enormous obstacles -  including poverty, racism, Chinese Exclusions Laws, and language barriers -  he persevered with grace, humor, and humanity. Tyrus Wong's rich legacy endures in the world of art and in the human spirit. This is what inspired me to tell Tyrus's story, and to share it with you and the rest of the world.

Since my first encounter with Tyrus over a decade ago, my team and I have been working tirelessly raising money, researching, and filming Tyrus’s life story. We’ve completed principal photography and are now in the edit room.

We're now turning to you to help us continue the momentum and complete the film by Summer 2013.

GOAL & STRETCH GOALS

We need a minimum of $35,000 to finish editing the film, but we can do more (lots more!) if we surpass this goal, which is why we have several ***stretch*** goals.  Here are our main benchmarks to complete the film:

Every amount, big and small, helps bring us one step closer to bringing Tyrus's inspiring life story to the big screen. Your support will make it happen!

Kickstarter is all or nothing.

We must reach our minimum goal in order to receive any of the pledges, which means your credit card will not be charged for the amount you specify unless we receive all $35,000 or more in funding by Dec 18.

When you make a pledge, you have the option of selecting a reward that is equal to, or less than the amount you're donating...or none at all.  For instance, if you make a $100 donation, you can choose any ONE reward that falls within the $8-$88 category.

If you have problems with the payment system (occasional glitches do occur), please email us at tyrusthemovie@yahoo.com and we'll figure it out.

ARE THERE OTHER METHODS OF DONATING BESIDES KICKSTARTER?

Yes. Email us and we'll help coordinate other methods of donating to the film.

IS MY KICKSTARTER DONATION TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?

Kickstarter donations are NOT tax deductible. If you'd like to make a tax-deductible donation, please Email us to find out how. (Please note that you cannot receive both a tax deduction and a Kickstarter reward.)

Since Kickstarter is an all or nothing game, we prefer that you donate through Kickstarter -- at least until we reach our minimum goal of 35K. Again, if we don't meet our goal, we receive none of your pledges, which would be a huge bummer!

CAN CONTRIBUTORS INCREASE A PLEDGE ONCE IT IS MADE?

Yes, you can!

Even after an initial pledge is made, you can sign back into your account and instead of a green "Back This Project" button, you will see a blue "Manage Your Donation" button. Click on the blue button and enter a new amount and, if you choose, select a new incentive. Please keep  in mind that even if you increase your pledge, you can still only select ONE reward. (Kickstarter also only allows donors to make a single pledge per project to underscore the idea that you are contributing to the project and not "buying" rewards.)

Speaking of rewards...it's time to see some of our unique rewards designed or donated especially for our contributors!

NEW REWARDS!!!!

The first two new rewards are originals by Tyrus. Both are signed in the lower right corner. Own a piece of the legacy!

The following reward is jaw dropping gorgeous! It's my (Pam) favorite painting among Tyrus's oeuvre, and for the very first time, is being offered to the public as a SIGNED high quality limited reproduction.

T-shirts (Women's sizes: S, M and L  /   Men's sizes: M, L and XL):

Bucket Hats like Tyrus wears! Select a light or dark color with the film's logo:

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

We will make our absolute best effort to deliver your rewards in a timely fashion in accordance with the dates we list on our Kickstarter page. We will even try to send them out earlier, if at all possible!
PLEASE NOTE: Regarding the delivery date of the DVDs, these will take place after the film's festival run, which will depend on the completion date of the film, and then how many, and which festivals the film gets into. If the film is lucky enough to also have a theatrical release, the DVD may not be available until this is also done.

Also, as we are finalizing our logo, please know that the final design on merchandise may change slightly, but the examples represented here are a very close representation of what we plan to deliver.

However, as with any creative project, there are unforeseen challenges that we may have to problem-solve – challenges that could potentially hinder our delivery of your rewards. We’ll keep you posted with our regular Kickstarter updates, informing you of any snags in our plans to get you your fun perks!
