Mount Starling Turns Classic Art Into Modern Design. Rembrandt Color Shocked, Renaissance Rocked, Caravaggio Redesigned.
Designs for walls & interior - color shocked - extremely zoomed - defragmented - rearranged - cherry picked - focused - recombined - merged - distorted - detailed.
Every piece of decorative design coming from the Mount Starling manufactory is an homage to all the masterly paintings and sculptures that have been created since the beginning of visual arts.
Stunning designs for outstanding minds and projects.
The creative ideas for Mount Starling designs come from everywhere, from sculptures of Mesopotamian times, frescos of the Renaissance or landscapes and wildlife of the 19th century.
We show our commitment in our own little "Apparel Series" of shirts - which of course are part of the Mount starling rewards!
Creating revolutionary new color schemes for paintings of the 15t, 16th and 17th century is one of many Design concepts, that we planned. A first referential example is Agnolo Bronzinos Holy Family. This transformed masterpiece of the 16th century will be part of a multi color design edition. In future customers will choose from almost any possible color combination.
It's our creative vision, to take the stunning visual ideas of Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Courbet and many other artist from the early middle ages until the nineteenth century and transform them into cutting-edge decorative design for walls and interior.
The Art Of Rearranging
A creative technique of our designers is to extract and rearrange exciting elements from classic paintings. This gives the designs a completely new, surprising meaning.
This distinctive Nautilus Cup was extracted from Willem Claesz Heda's sublime painting dated 1649 along with some oysters and given a striking new color scheme. The result is an opulent multi-color design edition. The design is finalized and ready for production. With the help of our backers on Kickstarter we want to explore the utmost best production and printing process for it.
A Dedicated Piece Of Design
The designs from the "Nautilus Series" are designed to be hung as a group on the big walls of a private loft or as a dedicated single piece that is intended for a very special place.
The fragmentation of art is another stylistic concept, which is currently explored by the Mount Starling design team. The best designs out of this series, such as Antonello da Messinas Madonna and Child (A.D. 1465) have become part of Mount Starling’s colorful “Scattered Art Edition”.
Elements of Art
Creative cherry picking is a visual concept in which Mount Starling designers will extract details from historic paintings and combine them with new elements or monochrome backgrounds. A good example for this creative technique is the tripple design below in which the Mountain Starling designers combined 3 birds of John James Audubon "Birds Of America Series" with a black varnished surface. Mount Starling is currently exploring the best printing technique for this challenging design.
Transformation is key
Many peculiar animals like this gracious duck painted by John James Audubon in the 19th century are transformed into 2019 cutting edge wall design. This limited edition of only 100 high-end prints is an illustrative example of how to turn historic art into decorative design.
Definitely No Art
We will create casual, surprising and joyful designs based on classic masterpieces of art, such as the various iconic "Roaring Deer" motives of the 19th and 20th century transformed and redesigned in many different colors.
One of Mount Starling's main design topics are the innumerable animals, flowers and plants that have been the artistic theme of so many paintings in the last 5000 years of visual art. "Freak'n Fish", "Flower Power" or "Beautiful Beasts" are only three of many limited editions planned by Mount Starling, featuring the wonders of nature in the history of visual art.
Our designers explore the effects that arise while zooming into paintings until every detail of the patina, every crack, every imprecision and even the smallest signs of decadence become visible. These creative experiments have inspired the Mount Starling design team to create a limited edition called "Extreme Zoom", starting with Joos van Craesbeecks pandemoniac masterpiece The Temptation of St Anthony.
An extreme zoom on the wide open eye, reveals St. Antony's fear and panic in the light of all the devils and demons haunting him. The designs of the "Frantic Eye Series" will be produced in many different colors.
With its "Illuminated Art Edition", we will bring light into the designs. Currently the design team explores first prototypes for this concept. The plan is to print the finished motives on acrylic plates or on special synthetics and illuminated by using a backlit LED system. Your support will very much help us to bring this product to market.
Dramatizing colors in Hans Gillisz Bollongier's exquisite still-life of a flower bouquet will be the main topic for a "flourishing" design series. To detect the perfect printing technique for this kind of design will be the next task on our work list.
Flower bouquets from the same epoch - different style. In this concept, Mount Starling will not transform one original artwork into one dedicated design. Instead multiple historic paintings will be reworked into multi-color design collages. The next challenge will be to choose the right printing machine and procedure to live up to the colorful concept.
We want to offer you as many color variations as possible for every design since everyone has different preferences and every living room is an highly individual place.
Design Concept Cactus Fish vs. Fishy Cactus
Every Mount Starling Design Edition is the result of through thinking combined with inspiration, stunning ideas and design excellence. A good example is the Fish-Versus-Cactus-Edition in which the designers merged 18th century illustrations with French bon mots and contemporary graphic artwork.
Sources Of Inspiration
Our designs are supposed to start with a journey through the history of art. We will roam through museums, art shows and galleries and examine countless books and exhibition catalogues looking for inspiration and new ideas.
Playing with details is going to be the main topic in a series of remastered Rembrandt portraits. The designs focus on one colorful detail within all portraits, the ruff. Focusing on details is one of the many different ideas and concepts that will create the basis for hundreds of limited Mount Starling editions.
A Close Look at Art
Many masterpieces of the 15th and 16th century amaze with their richness of detail and lively characters, scenes filled with emotions, drama and side stories. Those details are going to be set into focus, emphasizing the brilliant finesse of the artist‘s composition. Just like Caravaggio‘s „Judith beheading Holofernes“ - the detail is showing the strained, yet fragile facial expression of judith.
Many of our designs will be created and printed on demand. Therefore, it is possible to adapt the design fully to individual customer requirements, in terms of color, format and size.
Mount Starling Designs will be available in a wide range of formats and sizes, from 10X10 cm miniatures to super-large formats with several meters in height and length.
A Colorful World
Iconic pieces of art such as Albrecht Dürer‘s „Young Hare“ will be key elements of many Color Shock Editions but also motives for wallpapers and decorative accessories.
Materiality & Feel
Mount Starling designs are made for manifold materials - here is, where the design gets it‘s spice. We believe in print products and the haptic. We want to print our designs on high-quality papers, on canvas, but also as prints on glass, metal and acrylic surfaces.
Particular attention is going to be paid to the surface structure, the feel and the finish.
A lot of testing is still ahead of us!
Unveil The Modernity
Our mission is to bring the fascinating modernity to shine, which is inherent in so many old masterpieces of art.
A splendid example is this early 14th century illustration of the Jonah-And-The-Whale-Saga in the Persian Jami Al-Tavarikh Chronicles, being converted into a modern decorative wall design.
Creative Diversity and Fresh Ideas
We at Mount Starling want to create designs for every taste, every personal style, every environment and for the most diverse cultures.
To achieve this, we will build up a team of very young and talented designers coming from many countries.
This will generate a fresh look on every new Mount Starling edition.
We plan on working with hand picked printing Studios in Berlin, Leipzig and New York. The designs will be produced under the control of passionate specialists on high performance printers as well as traditional handcrafted printing techniques.
We plan on three quality levels for the Mount Starling designs: as high-end machine prints in museum quality, as hand crafted screen prints or even as re-painted single pieces.

We are going to create art design masterpieces of highest standards - from scratch to print. For this the production process of our products will rely on a team of hand-picked partners, each of them masters of their profession.
